Job summary

Following approval from the Department of Education, NHSE was awarded funding to develop a NHS National Supported Internship programme for young people with Learning Difficulties and/or Disabilities (LDD) as well as Autism.

This very unique and exciting opportunity has arisen to support students with their education within this Supported Internship programme called Choices College.

We are looking for Learning Support Assistants to work closely with our Tutors in delivering the educational outcomes of Employability and Functional skills qualifications

The post holder will be a confident communicator with students who have a range of learning disabilities and have recent extensive experience in supporting the education of students with SEN on a 1 to 1 basis in the classroom.

A passion for supporting students with SEN to meet their full potential is essential for this role.

Based in Hampshire, the post holder will be required to work in Basingstoke and Fareham.

Main duties of the job

The Learning Support Assistant's main duties will include supporting delivery of bespoke Employability training and functional skills to interns, supporting the delivery of sessions in a classroom setting. Maintaining weekly individual records for each student that meet inspection requirements, is also a part of this role.

The LSA will:

  • Support SEN pupils on a 1:1 basis in the classroom
  • Providing targeted support outside of the classroom such as the intern's placement
  • Work on differentiated activities with groups of students
  • Liaise with the tutor to deliver SEN provision
  • Support the development of social/emotional skills of the students
  • Work with tutors to monitor progress of pupils

Essential

  • Qualification in Supporting Teaching and learning
  • Qualifications to include GCSE/Functional Skills in English Language, NVQ/QCF, ECDL or equivalent level of knowledge

Desirable

  • Training in Systematic Instruction

Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Uses a range of communications channels to build relationships including excellent report writing, data entry, and telephone skills
  • Good planning, record keeping and organisational skills to support teaching staff in planning and delivery of sessions
  • Enthusiasm for the subject area and awareness of learners' needs and expectations and the ability to value these in your teaching support

Desirable

  • Awareness of the mental health and wellbeing implications of a training programme on the interns and of how to support anxiety and lack of engagement

Experience & Knowledge
