Job summary
As a Paediatric Training Programme Director, you will be an educational leader responsible for helping coordinate Paediatric Training across the East Midlands. Along with the senior education team comprising other TPDs, college tutors, Deputy Head of School and the Head of School you will ensure that national standards, determined by Royal Colleges, the GMC and HEE are implemented locally.
You will be working with 9 other TPDs, a Deputy Head of School and the Head of School of Paediatrics. We are friendly team that work collaboratively for the benefit of Paediatric trainees in the East Midlands. There is support from the HEE programmes team and our school administrators.
Responsibilities include trainee post allocations, oversight of supervision arrangements that are cascaded through college tutors, support for ARCPs and involvement in school educational and professional development activities. You would be supported in your role by the rest of the senior education team and the deputy head and head of School.
Applicants must be currently working within the East Midlands area at consultant level or equivalent in the specialty school area. Experience within the specialty at consultant level is essential as is considerable experience of working with learners or doctors in training in an educational context.
Main duties of the job
The postholder will focus upon:
- East Midlands North ST1-3 Paediatric trainees including post allocations
Additional responsibilities include:
- Oversight of trainee longitudinal supervision arrangements with support from college tutors in the training units in the East Midlands North region.
- Contributing to and attending ARCPs by working closely with the Assessments Team
- Supporting School of Paediatrics courses (e.g., Effective educational supervision, START, middle grade ready)
- Helping implement the RCPCH Progress Plus Curriculum
- MRCPCH support
- Supporting trainees and being responsive to trainee queries
- Advising trainees or supervisors where trainees are having difficulties
- Liaison with the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne about the Trent-Melbourne exchange scheme
- Oversight of the Paediatric families scheme in East Midlands North
It essential to be able work effectively with doctors in training and other colleagues. An interest in trainee welfare, medical education and quality in training is vital.

The School of Paediatrics is a large school that covers all paediatric and paediatric subspeciality training across the East Midlands. Whilst it is subdivided into North and South sections it functions as a single school. The North section encompasses hospitals and community paediatrics in Burton, Chesterfield, Derby, Lincoln, Mansfield and Nottingham. The South section includes Boston, Kettering, Leicester, Northampton and Peterborough.
We provide structured run through paediatric training programmes that train paediatricians of the future to be Consultants. Our aim is to equip them with skills, knowledge, and experience combined with the ability to think analytically, problem solve, manage and lead their teams.
