Main duties of the job
The Senior Scientific Adviser plays an integral role in managing the team and should be broadly familiar with NICE's guidance programmes and science policy and research activities.
The role will consist of:
1. Contributing to the development of responses to science policy issues. Typically, a policy response is needed when new scientific developments, or new policy decisions by government or regulators, mean that NICE's policies or methods require updating.
2. Working with teams across NICE to prioritise and co-ordinate science policy and research activities, including supporting updates of our guidance development manuals.
3. Contributing to NICE Listens, which uses deliberative public engagement on moral, ethical or social value issues to inform NICE's policies and methods.
4. Managing NICE's delivery of multi-stakeholder collaborative projects under the supervision of the Associate Director.
5. Providing senior technical expertise and input relating to the delivery of science policy and methods research projects.
6. Developing proposals for funding applications in collaboration with partners in the UK and internationally.
7. Developing relationships with key UK, European and international funders, research councils, policy organisations, academia and industry.
8. Other duties as required.
About us
The Science Policy team undertakes research and works with and influences external policy partners on scientific and research issues related to the work of NICE. The team develops NICE's methods for health technology assessment and guideline development, and encourages partners to commission research relevant to our research priority areas. We have built up a broad portfolio of science policy and research methods projects that addresses some of the most challenging issues facing NICE. Examples of recent and ongoing projects include our work with NHS England and the Department for Health and Social Care to develop innovative models that inform payments for new antimicrobials, our review of the implementation of the NICE severity modifier, and our appraisal of policy options regarding the perspective to be taken in economic analyses underpinning NICE guidance. We are also responsible for NICE Listens, NICE's programme for deliberative public engagement.
We can offer you a great place to work with good benefits, flexible working, and a supportive, friendly and inclusive environment.
