The Health Technology Assessment Adviser is responsible for ensuring the technical quality of the outputs of the Appraisals Team and for the line management of a group of health technology analysts.

Contract type: Full-time, fixed term until 31 March 2024

Main duties of the job

The Health Technology Assessment Adviser is responsible for ensuring the technical quality of the outputs of the Appraisals Team and for the line management of a group of health technology analysts. This involves providing leadership on technical issues, reviewing and quality assuring the work of the team of health technology assessment analysts, contributing to the training and development of new and existing members of staff, and leading the development of high-quality methodological practice across the Appraisals Programme. These roles are in addition to acting as Technical Lead on some appraisals, and include participating in appeal hearings and providing scientific advice to technology developers.

The Centre for Health Technology Evaluation develops guidance on the use of new and existing medicines, treatments and procedures within the NHS.

The Technology Appraisals programme at NICE advises the NHS and patients on the clinical and cost effectiveness of the technologies reviewed and their optimal position in clinical practice.

Essential

  • Doctorate in a relevant subject and further specialist training, or equivalent level of knowledge acquired through experience and further training/development

Experience

Essential

  • Experience in using technical evaluation in policy formulation and decision making

Desirable

  • Experience of supporting the NHS and/or technology developers in understanding the commercial risk/opportunities associated with a technology

Skills

Essential

  • Expert in methods of health technology assessment and/or guideline development, and the ability to manipulate, analyse and critique economic models
  • Working knowledge of the following areas and specialist expertise in at least one of the following: health economic modelling, probability and statistics, economics, risk management, pricing uncertainty, clinical trials, epidemiology or systematic reviewing
  • High drive and determination to take ownership and resolve complex problems
