The Pathology Department is unique as a multidisciplinary establishment covering Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Biochemistry, Microbiology (including Parasitology), and Serology. In addition, Microbiological testing of food, water and environmental samples for specific target organisms is carried out.

If you are an enthusiastic, Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) (UK) Registered Bio Medical Scientist with experience of working in the NHS who holds specialise level qualifications in Microbiology & knowledge of Haematology and Biochemistry who is looking for a new challenge then we would like to hear from you.

Main duties of the job

The main duties will consist of maintaining and adhering to the quality management system, deputising for the Laboratory Manager as well as helping cover the microbiology service in all areas, which includes but is not limited to plate reading, in house media production, stock takes and stock orders.

External Quality Assessment (EQA) and Internal Quality Control (IQC) review and performance to lead quality meetings monthly, help to prepare for yearly the UK accreditation service visits and guide UK accreditation service through our paperwork and methodology.

Experience

Essential

  • Minimum of five years post registration experience of working as a qualified biomedical scientist, in a hospital laboratory
  • At least 1 years demonstrable supervisory and managerial experience
  • An understanding and in-depth knowledge of quality management principles, quality management systems and the requirements of laboratory accreditation
  • Experience of developing, implementing and managing formally recognised Quality Systems e.g. UKAS ISO15189
  • Evidence of successful implementation of change management programmes
  • Involvement in Quality Management (QM) and Quality Control (QC) and assurance systems and demonstrable experience of effective QM supervision and expert knowledge of QM and document control
  • Evidence of using technical experience and expertise to assess new and existing systems and processes to innovate and initiate change in laboratory practice and experience in critically assessing current ways of working and in reduction of Risk
  • Experience of conducting assessments that ensure safe and efficient working practice
  • Previous experience of participation in audit process ideally UKAS
  • Advanced level of understanding of complex and intricate/complex analytical instruments that require maintenance, calibration, internal and external controls
  • Experience of planning and project management
  • Competent in the use of standard ITC software packages such as Word, Excel, Access etc
  • Excellent practical laboratory skills and manual dexterity
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proven ability to work accurately and efficiently
  • Excellent time management skills in order to work on several different projects at the same time and prioritise tasks to meet pressing deadlines while maintaining standards of service
