Job summary

Were looking for an experienced SQL analyst to play an integral role in the Research and Intelligence team and ensure we fulfil our statutory and corporate responsibilities.

Main duties of the job

The analyst will be responsible for providing regular, useful and accurate extracts of Register data and providing methodological advice on all intelligence projects and publications.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. Solely responsible for querying and extracting data from the Register database Microsoft SQL Server:

to undertake our statutory responsibilities in responding to freedom of information requests and parliamentary questions from the House of Commons and House of Lords

to provide data (including disclosable patient information) to external researchers in line with Regulations, ensuring that regulatory exclusions are appropriately applied

to enable responses to a broad spectrum of other high-level requests including consultations, legal cases, ministerial questions, and requests from clinics and the Department of Health and Social Care

2. Work autonomously to provide accurate Register data in a timely and accessible manner to the Research and Intelligence team to enable all intelligence publications, including our flagship corporate report, Fertility Trends

3. Populate Tableau with regular extracts of Register data and work with the team to ensure that extracts continue to provide meaningful, useful and accurate data to meet the requirements of the intelligence team and external stakeholders

4. Advise the Head of Intelligence and Research Managers on the appropriate methodological approach to undertake analytical work and how to translate data extracts into publications and reports for internal and external use

5. Be the advisory contact for Register data to colleagues from across the HFEA including the senior management, inspection, compliance, legal, register and policy teams; and external organisations such as Department of Health and research establishments.

6. Provide expertise on the structure and quality of Register data over time, liaising with internal and external stakeholders to determine their requirements. Relay the strengths and limitations of Register data.

7. Work closely with colleagues in the Register and IT teams, communicating analytical requirements for the research and intelligence team and translating back technical specifications.

8. Work with a range of colleagues and stakeholders to champion the use of intelligence and information internally and with external stakeholders. Work with the Head of Intelligence to develop an intelligence strategy and other processes for managing information requests and publications

9. Manage and maintain a production environment, encompassing change control and release management

Essential

  • Significant experience of working in a production environment encompassing change control and release management
  • Extensive experience of statistical analysis in a healthcare or public setting, particularly administrative datasets
  • Excellent skills in manipulating large, complicated and sensitive datasets
  • Experience developing stored procedures and functions in SQL
  • Advanced knowledge and experience of working with relational databases e.g. MS SQL server/Azure
  • Track record of providing high quality and accurate information under pressure

Desirable

  • Experience of SSMS
  • Experience of Tableau, including creating and managing dashboards

Knowledge

Essential

  • Extensive knowledge of SQL and T-SQL software coding languages
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel
