Job summary

The Physical Activity Clinical Champions (PACC) programme is part of the Moving Healthcare Professionals Programme (MHPP) is a partnership programme led by OHID and Sport England, which aims to increase awareness, skills and change clinical practice of health professionals in the promotion of physical activity to patients at risk of, or with, health conditions.

The role of the Medic Clinical Champion is to organise and deliver standardised peer-to-peer online training on physical activity in clinical care to other NHS health care professionals. While the national teams will use communication strategies and wider engagement to build awareness for the clinical champions training, which will lead to expressions of interest from potential attendees, the Clinical Champion will also be expected to advertise the sessions themselves by making use of their networks and building relationships with local, regional and national stakeholders.

Roles are based across East of England, South East, South West, North East & North West. We are particularly interested in applications from Healthcare Professionals working in East of England, South East and North West, North East and South West though we will be accepting applications from all locations in England. Please note, during the sifting process, applications from preferred locations will be prioritised.

6 roles are available across these locations (not in each). 12 hours per month.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide professional leadership working with partners, including Local Authorities, ICSs, Royal Colleges, Active Partnerships and Foundation Trusts. They will improve public health through driving behavioural changes towards healthier lifestyles, helping fellow professionals to support individuals to take more responsibility for their health and initiating a culture shift with respect to physical activity within their, and other, clinical professions.

The Clinical Champion will support the team’s efforts to activate and integrate lifestyle behaviour change into clinical practice across the life course, with a primary focus on physical activity.

The role reports to the MHPP Clinical Champions Project Manager.

Assessment - to demonstrate your teaching style, you will be asked to prepare a 10-minute online educational presentation using teams to present on “Physical activity within patient care” aimed at a specific clinical audience imagining that the Interview Panel are that audience. This will be followed by around five minutes of questions and answers.

The posts are contracted to 31st December 2022, with a possibility to extend past this date.

As a clinical champion the post-holder will:

Link with training leads in NHS trusts to identify training opportunities with their respective health professional cohorts and deliver a standard training package (which you will be trained to deliver) to groups of NHS HCPs in hospitals or in the community / primary care setting.

Engage with and promote collaborative partnerships and projects designed to support implementation of evidenced based interventions to reduce inactivity and promote physical activity across the life course at health-enhancing levels at national, regional and local levels.

Strengthen local capacity and leadership for physical activity by supporting the development of, and delivering, training and capacity building across the health system.

Recognise the complexity of enabling people to get physical activity; that wider determinants of health affect people differently; and that work of PACC’s should contribute towards reducing health inequalities in line with OHID’s core objective

Engage with OHID’s infrastructure (governance groups, stakeholder engagement, academic partnerships, networks, strategy, planning and guidance) and use this insight to enable clinicians and clinical networks to deliver coherent evidence-based information relating to physical activity to patients, and practical interventions in their everyday practice.

Support appropriate engagement in physical activity across the life course across professional boundaries and the whole health and social care economy.

Support the evaluation of the programme by collecting data and ensuring timely completion of forms for each training session.

· To participate in all mandatory training as required, i.e. fire safety, information governance and all other mandatory training.
