We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our dynamic Evidence Islington team as the Training and Capacity Building Coordinator.
Evidence Islington is a NIHR-funded Health Determinants Research Collaboration that aims to improve how local authorities gather, link and use evidence to inform decision-making and practice, with a particular focus on wider determinants of health (e.g. housing, environment). This initiative is a collaboration between Islington council, Healthwatch Islington, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and University College London. We are curious, collaborative and committed to producing efficient, effective and timely evidence to inform policy and practice, and to meaningful engagement with residents and VCS organisations throughout our work.
You will be responsible for building sustainable research and analysis capacity across the Council and with partners by creating a learning and development offer to improve opportunities to build capability for research skills and practice for colleagues and partners. You will have an exciting and fundamental role in enabling officers and local councillors to become evidence confident by building sustainable evidence user capability and developing the knowledge and skills needed to choose and use rigorous evidence across our workforce.
Main duties of the job
You will be developing and overseeing the research training and development programme for staff, working in close collaboration with our partner NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) North Thames Academy and the Councils Organisational Development team.
We are looking for someone with:
- Proven ability to teach at any level within applied health/methods based research and across a range of subjects at a more introductory level
- Experience of presenting applied health research and/or research around wider determinants of health to a range of audiences including those who deliver or commission public sector services and lay audiences
- Experience of developing (and delivering ) innovative training and courses, course materials and methods of delivery
- Proven ability to support others to upskill and achieve their goal or develop in either a formal or informal pathway
- Experience working in multi-disciplinary and cross-organisational teams
- Strong communication skills.

both through internal resources (such as those provided by Evidence Islington) and through our partners (such as through NIHR North Thames ARC Academy).4.Enable officers and members to become evidence confident by building sustainable evidence user capability and developing the knowledge and skills needed to choose and use rigorous evidence across our workforce. 5.Support and embed a sustainable research-informed, data-driven culture across the Council. 6.Develop and deliver a comprehensive and innovative offer to improve colleagues opportunities to develop research skills and experience. This will include internal learning and development, secondments, honorary contracts, access to academic courses, support for postgraduate study - using a blended learning approach, including workshops, online and bite sized learning.7.Work in collaboration with colleagues at the NIHR ARC North Thames Academy to adapt and create materials to make relevant for Council colleagues and with particular focus around addressing the wider determinants of health.8.Contribute to developing and implementing an evaluation framework to assess the impact of HDRC training for research capacity and capability building.9.Develop and monitor outcomes measuring and describing research capacity, capability, and activities.10.Develop and maintain relationships with academic partners and others to accommodate students for internships, Masters and PhDs and/or to provide public health training opportunities.11.Coordinate, design and deliver skills development training on topics including emerging research methods, collaborative working and knowledge mobilisation.12.Contribute and partner with the NIHR ARC North Thames successful mentoring and alumni initiatives to train established researchers as mentors to support researchers to develop research in areas of unmet need.13.To support and collaborate with the research activities of the Evidence Islington team. 14.Organise and deliver teaching as agreed with the Evidence Islington Programme Director and ARC NT Academy lecturer.15.Use experience and knowledge (and an understanding of students backgrounds and abilities) to design, deliver and assess teaching and learning.Leadership To drive positive cultural change, embodying and promoting the values and behaviours of the council and empowering colleagues to reach their full potential.
