Job summary

Greenwich Central Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) Team

The Central AMHP Team provides a single point of access to all requests for assessment under the Mental Health Act 1983 (2007). The team is comprised of Advanced Practitioners who are all qualified practicing AMHPs, an AMHP team manager and team administrator.

The service delivery incorporates all age ranges as well as those who may already be receiving mental health input from specialist services, such as children and mental health services, learning disability services and others. The aim of the team is to provide a timely response to all requests for assessment and a clear management framework for the delivery of a service to people who are experiencing a mental health crisis and are assessed to need either additional support in the community or admission to hospital. In each individual situation the objective is to ensure that a less restrictive and appropriate intervention is pursued through a multi-disciplinary approach to risk assessment and risk management. In supporting a strength based, person centred approach all requests for assessments under the Mental Health Act will be approached in a planned and considered way, through early consultation and collaborative working with community teams, service user and carer networks and community services.

Main duties of the job

To support you in your AMHP role you will receive:

  • Access to a manager who is AMHP qualified 24/7
  • 1 to 1 reflective AMHP post assessment supervision
  • Access to Social Work, AMHP and Reflective Practice Forums for peer group discussion reflection and supervision
  • An AMHP mentor to provide additional support in your first year of employment
  • 18 hours (3 days) of AMHP approval training in each year
  • A structured induction to Greenwich AMHP service
  • A welcome meeting with the Head of Social Care and Lead Social Worker to discuss and plan for your continued development pathway as an Advanced Practitioner and AMHP
  • Regular access to our Mental Health Lead Social Worker/Lead AMHP to support and develop your Advanced social work practice
  • Protected time each year to work on your professional portfolio (Social Work England registration)
  • Up to 2 days in each 5 year period to complete your AMHP re-approval portfolio

For these roles you must hold:

  • A registered professional social work qualification.

In accordance with the Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007), to undertake the duties and responsibilities placed on Approved Mental Health Professionals in England. The Mental Health (Approved Mental Health Professionals) (Approval) (England) Regulations 2008. Greenwich AMHP Standard Operating Procedures (May 2022) lays out detailed guidance on the professional competencies and requirements associated with the AMHP role within Royal Greenwich Mental Health Service.

In accordance with the Care Act 2014, to respond to requests for assessment for adults who present with care and support needs, focussing on outcomes to improve a persons wellbeing and prevent or reduce needs.

To undertake the role of Safeguarding Adults Manager, Enquiry Officer, MARAC representative, Think Family Champion, and all other forms of safeguarding work. Through this providing consultation and support to designated teams.

To provide professional social work or AMHP consultation, advice, oversight, and guidance on statutory functions to multidisciplinary teams and external organisations.

To lead on the delivery of strengths based person centred social work practice in mental health.

To support and co-work complex cases which require Advanced Practitioner/AMHP input.

To be accountable to AMHP Team Manager and Lead Social Worker for the professional supervision and appraisal mechanisms of designated social workers and AMHPs working across all Community Mental Health Teams.

To undertake the role and responsibilities of Practice Educator, Assessor and Mentor to students undertaking professional social work training, newly qualified social workers on the Assessed and Supported Year in Employment and trainee AMHPs undertaking the MA in Advanced Mental Health Practice programme.

To coordinate professional teaching and learning opportunities and activities to help lift and develop the profile of social work/AMHP practice, performance, and efficiency across all service areas.

To ensure that all work undertaken complies with Council policies and procedures and that the Councils statutory obligations are met.

To take responsibility for maintaining own registration with the professional regulator (Social Work England).

Conducting the roles and functions of an Advanced Practitioner/Senior Social Worker, as outlined in the Knowledge & Skills Statements for Social Workers in Adults Services and underpinned by the Professional Capabilities Framework for Social Workers.

Main duties of the post

2. To contribute to the delivery, development, and modernisation of the 24 hour AMHP service through a model of continuous service improvement.

4. To contribute to the development, maintenance and updating of management information systems in accordance with Directorate policies and statutory procedures.

To provide professional supervision for up to three members of staff, facilitate peer group supervision and post assessment supervision to designated social work/AMHP members of the community mental health teams on a regular basis, ensuring developmental needs of social workers is met across the teams.

6. To ensure the effective planning and coordination of services in response to requests for AMHP intervention, is proportionate, the least restrictive and meets the criteria for Mental Health Act assessment.

7. To work creatively with Adults, their families, and carers and collaboratively with other professionals. To ensure that assessments are conducted using strength based person centred principles, in conjunction with other agencies as appropriate.

8. To represent the department and maintain close working arrangements with key stakeholders and agencies towards the development of effective working practices.

9. To take delegated responsibility for the setting of individual standards, priorities, and targets and for the allocation of work within the service.

10. To ensure that management and performance information is routinely collated and discussed and that all staff assume responsibility for compliance with recording and reporting systems.

11. To ensure that work undertaken actively promotes the Councils equal opportunities policy in relation to service delivery and personal practice.

20. To participate and attend training as required and to take responsibility for ones own training and professional development needs, this may include maintaining a portfolio of professional practice to meet the requirements of AMHP re-approval.

22. To Chair multi-disciplinary case conference/meetings to facilitate decision making processes in appropriate cases as directed by the Team Manager.

23. To keep abreast of changes to local and national policies, procedures and legislation affecting current and future service delivery and disseminate this information across the team/s.
