The Public Health department of Swindon Borough Council is undergoing a period of exciting change, focused on reducing harms and improving outcomes for individuals and the community. To facilitate this change we are seeking a dynamic professional to join our team and help to embed our vision of the future.

As a public health specialist you will have responsibility for identifying need, commissioning and procuring services to the community, managing multi-million pound contracts and liaising with a range of partners across the spectrum of public, private and voluntary sector.

Main duties of the job

Working with the wider team your experience will be instrumental in promoting health improvement and protection, by representing Public Health at agreed partnership events, using your specialist skills and knowledge for the benefit of the team, for example through supporting research, and supporting it at times of health emergencies. A key element of this particular specialist post is delivering substance misuse services to the local community and supporting the mental health co-morbidity agenda.

The Public Health team are expected to deliver across the four domains of public health: (1) health intelligence, using data and evidence to inform all we do; (2) Health Protection this about dealing with cases or outbreaks of communicable disease; (3) Health Improvement this about helping people to improve and maintain their health by developing, implementing and evaluating strategies and interventions; (4) Healthcare public health services this is about using evidence to support service development and to ensure the quality of services by assisting in the commissioning of services.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Read full role profile
  • A first degree or qualification of equivalent academic ability
  • Health Protection or Infection Control qualification

Desirable

  • A Masters in Public Health (Desirable)
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Project management qualification or relevant experience
  • To be registered or working towards registration at practitioner level with UKPHR (desirable)
