Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity to
join the Public Health team at Swindon Borough Council and contribute to a wide
range of programmes designed to improve the health and wellbeing of the local
population and reduce inequalities.
We are looking for a great analyst
who will bring data to life, turning it into insight which informs decision
making and helps to develop evidence based needs assessments. You will be comfortable
with using data to test hypotheses and be skilled at presenting your findings
to a range of audiences in a clear and accessible way.
You will be a high performing and
enthusiastic individual who is able to build effective relationships with
colleagues and partners. You will be highly numerate with statistical and data
analysis skills, report writing, and an understanding of how health data can be
used to drive change.

- First degree with a substantial numerical component (or demonstrable equivalent experience or degree equivalent qualification).
- A post-graduate qualification (at PG diploma or higher level) in a subject directly relevant to statistics / epidemiology / public health informatics.

- Knowledge and understanding of statistics and statistical methods relevant to public health and the limitations of such methods.
- Knowledge and understanding of key population health concepts and principles (e.g. standardisation, various forms of risk and their application).
- Advanced skills in using common statistical packages, e.g. Excel and/or a basic level of competency in using statistical and data analysis software packages, e.g. Python, R, SPSS; or business analytic solutions e.g. MS Power BI; or programming languages e.g. C, C++; or SQL.
- Understanding of the wider determinants of health and knowledge of approaches aimed at reducing health inequalities.
- Knowledge of the theory and experience of the application of public health practice, health improvement/promotion and prevention of ill-health.
- Knowledge of local authorities, NHS structures and of the arrangements for providing healthcare in England.
