School Nursing services in Newham are directly
provided by The London Borough of Newham. The local authority is working in partnership with Greenwich University to select a January 2025 cohort of
students to undertake the Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN)
School Nursing.
Fully funded and salaried (APTC equivalent to AfC
band 5) training places are available now. The School Nurse career path
offers lots of opportunities for progression, with salaries equivalent to LBN
PO3-PO7 (AfC bands 6 to 8).

Main duties of the job
The fundamental responsibilities of the post holder are to attain the academic credentials and the clinical skills required to practice as a NMC registered Specialist Community Public Health Nurse on a defined pathway. These are summarised below:
To fulfil the requirements of the Specialist Community Practitioner programme by attending university course dates and practice placement days in accordance with University regulations
To work with the Specialist Community Practice Teacher to develop the skills and competencies to achieve NMC Registration Standards for Specialist Community Practice

This post is directly employed by the London Borough of Newham, who was the first London borough to offer a fully integrated 0-19 health and social care service as it also assumed direct responsibility for providing School Nursing services, Health Visiting and Family Nurse Partnership in 2017, therefore our CYPS Directorate will be delivering the 0-19 Healthy Child programme through the Childrens Health Service.
The 0-19 Children's Health service had their CQC inspection in 2021 and rated Good in all areas.

Job Summary: To work towards gaining the standards of proficiency for entry to the NMC register/recordable for (SCPHN)
To provide the SCPHN with a learning environment which will enable the student to develop knowledge, skills and competencies to take on the role of a qualified SCPHN within a defined pathway.
To gain the knowledge and skills and competence required in order to exercise higher levels of judgement, discretion and decision making in clinical care focusing on four broad areas:
- Clinical practice
- Community Engagement
- Clinical practice development
- Leadership in clinical practice
The post of the SCPHN Sponsorship Student is a development post building on existing knowledge, skills and competencies to achieve a higher level of practice resulting in an academic qualification as well as a recordable/registerable qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

- Knowledge of the Public Health role of contemporary health visiting & working in community settings
- Knowledge of local and national policies which influence the provision of health visiting
- Current knowledge of safeguarding issues
- Knowledge of quality issues, the audit process and clinical governance
- Experience of working within multi-disciplinary teams
- Evidence of involvement in the management of difficult situations and conflict resolution
- Academic ability to study independently at degree or postgraduate level
- Good computer literacy skills e.g. Microsoft word, excel
- Excellent, adaptable communication skills both written and verbal
- Numeracy and Literacy skills
- Ability to support children and families to make informed decisions in relation to their health and well-being

- DipHE (or above) qualification equivalent to 120 credits at level 5 (of the Higher Education Credit Framework for England) 2 or evidence of previous education and learning to this level. 3
- Literacy and Numeracy at the level of the National Qualifications Framework at level 1-2 for Numeracy (equivalent of GCSE) and 3-4 for Literacy (equivalent of A level)
