Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic, talented, and experienced Speech and Language Therapist to deliver a comprehensive and specialist service with the Youth Justice Service to the team, wider workforce, and the young people with whom they work.

The successful candidate will be part of a supportive, integrated multi-agency team alongside other specialist roles embedded in the Youth Justice Service including Education and Employment Workers, CAMHS workers, LD Nurse, Police Officer, Probation Officer, Youth Justice Practitioners, Social Workers, and Prevention Workers. The post holder will also be part of BMBC childrens service and will maintain strong links with partners in health, therapy services and education.

The post holder will plan, develop and co-ordinate the speech and language therapy service to children with numerous vulnerabilities and complex communication disorders within the Barnsley Youth Justice and Vulnerable Adolescent Service (Bsafe). There is a strong consultative element within this role.

Main duties of the job

The post involves identification at a specialist level of the varying types of communication need found in this cohort of children and the provision of a menu of suitable interventions, including screening and assessment, referral on to other services, individual interventions with young people, consultation, support for group delivery and work with staff and young people to raise their awareness in this area.

The successful candidate will work closely with staff to enhance their communication skills with children who have these additional needs. As part of their work the post holder will undertake the training of Youth Justice Service staff and staff in partner agencies to raise awareness of the types of communication difficulties faced by young people and strategies to support their communication. The post holder will also provide information, advice and guidance to service leads, relevant management and strategic groups.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of Formulating Assessments and / or Care plans within a multi-disciplinary environment
  • Experience of working with complex needs in children, young people or adults, including undiagnosed speech, language and communication needs.
  • Experience of working with parents to provide remedial interventions to address the consequences of late diagnosis.
  • Proven clinical competence in the assessment, diagnosis and management of children with developmental and communication needs including Neuro-diverse conditions

Desirable

  • Experience of project management and/or service development
  • Experience of working Youth Justice and in a multidisciplinary team, with good interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Experience of audit and service evaluation.
  • Experience of leading professional development of others e.g., student

Qualifications

Essential

  • Level 6 in Speech and Language Pathology and Therapy, or equivalent Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists Certificate to Practice as a Speech and Language Therapist
  • Current registration with the Health Care Professions Council
  • Evidence of continuous Professional Development

Desirable

  • Level 7 Clinical educator qualification or equivalent
  • Health Care Professions Council registration

General and Special Knowledge

  • Highly specialist clinical knowledge and Knowledge of legislative and policy context within statutory services to children, young people, and adults.
  • Knowledge of Child Development research and its application, with specific reference to language acquisition and development
  • Knowledge of how to inform service development in a manner sensitive to people with speech language and communication difficulties

  • Ability to undertake assessments and formulate plans for intervention in line with Royal College of Speech and Language standards. Ability to autonomously manage a complex caseload and provide highly specialist assessment, formulation, intervention and advice.
  • Ability to be a reflective practitioner with persuasive, motivational and empathetic skills excellent clinical reasoning skills and leadership qualities.
  • Facilitate participation and work with individuals and groups whilst retaining the ability to think of the family as the client.
  • Highly developed analytical and judgement skills, particularly where there are a range of assessment options and the ability to articulate those assessments through pre-emptive thinking and excellent verbal and written skills
  • Ability to manage a challenging caseload and deal with difficult or volatile situations ensuring that outcomes are maintained at all times. Manage and prioritise caseload and tasks autonomously and consistently
