Job summary

We are looking for a motivated individual with experience across a number of public health areas who wants to take their career to the next step.

You should have an excellent understanding of the policy and commissioning context in public health, and an awareness of health inequalities in areas such as West Sussex.

The Public Health Directorate works together to improve the health and wellbeing of the population of West Sussex, covering areas across the life course including starting well, living and working well, ageing well and dying well, mental health, health protection and reducing health inequalities.

The Opportunity

Salary: £56,713 to £59,946 per annum

Working Pattern: Full time, 37 hours per week

Contract Type: 1-year Fixed term or Secondment opportunity to 16 June 2025

Location: County Hall, Chichester and working remotely, includes county-wide travel

As the Public Health Lead Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Reduction and Health Improvement, you will lead a portfolio of work to improve the health and wellbeing of people in West Sussex and ensure the best use of our resources to achieve good public health outcomes for our population.

Reporting to the Consultant in Public Health, you will coordinate the strategic approach to CVD reduction and health inequalities agenda, and act as the strategic lead for our Integrated Health Improvement programme (West Sussex Wellbeing).

Main duties of the job

In this role you will manage resources and large-scale activities, both operational and strategic, often requiring coordination with other teams closely related functions. You will be closely involved in developing the future shape of service provision. You will build relationships and influence activities, including using your public health expertise working across and outside of the organisation to improve public health outcomes.

What are we looking fo

You will be motivated with experience across a number of areas of public health.

You will preferably have knowledge and understanding of NHS health checks, tobacco control and stop smoking, weight management (Tier 2 particularly), Making Every Contact Count (MECC), alcohol early intervention services and falls prevention programmes, as well NHS commissioned prevention programmes.

You will be able to demonstrate a commitment to making a difference by narrowing the inequalities gap locally.

You will bring strong skills around assessing and translating evidence and partnership working to bring about real change.

You will need to be flexible, and will be comfortable engaging in new areas of work, forging new links and developing new work programmes.

You will have experience of line management and budget management

  • Post-graduate professional qualification relevant to Public Health or
  • management, e.g. Masters in Public Health, or equivalent level of significant experience demonstrating comprehensive application of the above levels of knowledge in a relevant setting.

Experience

  • Experience in the use of statistical and epidemiological methods for
  • analysing, interpreting and understanding data.
  • Significant post-qualification experience in dealing with significant and
  • complex Public Health issues in a strategic, policy or project management
  • role.
  • Knowledge / experience of project and/or programme management
  • methodologies, experience of setting up projects from scratch and of
  • managing projects to achieve successful outcomes.
  • Expert specialist, theoretical and practical knowledge relating to public
  • health.
  • Sound practical and theoretical knowledge of the political, organisational and commissioning environment of local government and partner organisations including the NHS and the voluntary and community sector.
  • Demonstrable ability to plan and prioritise over short-, medium- and long-term timeframes and to adjust plans and resource requirements accordingly.
  • Exposure to shaping and supporting initiatives in a political environment.
  • Experience of working with partners in a multi-agency environment.
