The Health Protection portfolio are currently seeking a Public Health Practitioner to join their team. This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience in a local authority, working within the fast-moving area of health protection. You will work in collaboration with partner organisations such as the UK Health Security Agency, NHS England, NHS Sussex and WSCC Adult Social Care, across a broad portfolio of work to ensure the council meets its statutory health protection functions.

As a Public Health Practitioner, you will support the day-to-day business of the WSCC health protection function to ensure high quality, safe and effective delivery across the county, and be a first point of contact for specialist knowledge for internal and external stakeholders. You will work with a range of agencies to ensure priorities are understood, influence and gain assurance.

You will analyse a range of operational data, drawing conclusions, analysing trends and other statistical information to make recommendations to drive forward improvements or new ways of working.

Main duties of the job

What are we looking for?

As a Public Health Practitioner, you will have:

  • A sound theoretical and procedural knowledge at a relevant Public Health Practitioner level
  • A good understanding of the general operations of a county council (or similar), which you will have gained from practical application.
  • A good awareness of the prevention of communicable diseases and you will keep yourself up to date and compliant with all relevant legislation, procedures, policies and professional codes of conduct to uphold standards of best practice.

You will need to be able to work alone or as part of a team, be organised, self-motivated and able to plan your own workload. You will be able to draw on analysis and business planning information to influence a range of colleagues, managers and elected members, in order to strive for continual improvement. You will need to be able to embrace change and be flexible in order to respond to the needs of the service.

You will be using your excellent communication skills to convey a range of information, predominantly of a technical and specialist nature, to a range of audiences, in meetings and presentations, and in writing, through a combination of reports, documents and emails, ensuring that the community and stakeholders have the information they need to inform decision making.

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience of working within a public health environment, local authority, UKHSA, NHS or other relevant setting.
  • Relevant advanced theoretical or organisational knowledge of systems, procedures and policies in an appropriate specialism (e.g. training and development environment).
  • Detailed knowledge of the wider service unit, legislation, organisational policies, practices and procedures.
  • Experience of providing expert advice to customers, providing advice and working in partnership with other agencies.
  • Demonstrable experience of managing initiatives and effectively managing resources to deliver those objectives and dealing efficiently and sensitively with a range of clients.
  • Experience of producing detailed documents / reports to provide information to others.
  • Demonstrable experience of monitoring budgets effectively to deliver a service within available resources.
  • Demonstrable evidence and implementing policies in response to new or amended legislation, or Government initiatives.
  • Sound and accurate IT knowledge e.g. Microsoft Office, in order to produce written and statistical reports, carry out research, analyse documents and present data using computerised software.

Desirable

  • UKPHR Public Health Practitioner registration, or willing to work towards this
