Main duties of the job

As a Young People Support Worker in our Emerald Team, you'll have the opportunity to positively impact the lives of young people. In our dynamic and supportive environment, you'll contribute to a range of integrated services for young people, their families.

In this role, your key responsibilities will be completing a support assessment to highlight the needs, risks and strengths for a young person and formulate a plan of support. You will work alongside other young peoples support workers as well as social workers within the team. You will receive regular supervision from a supportive management team.

A solid understanding of child/adolescent development, risks, and indicators of exploitation, vulnerabilities, and exploitation is crucial.

To excel in this role, you should possess an NVQ Level 4 or equivalent significant experience in a relevant field and proven engagement with vulnerable children and young people aged 10-17.

There will be a requirement to occasionally work with children and families when they most need it which may be outside of normal working hours, including weekends. The number of out of hours worked will not exceed 10% of the total contracted hours per week.

Young People Support Workers will be deployed as part of Wiltshires multi-agency Young People Service. The role of the Young People Support Workers is to establish strong relationships with children, young people, parents and carers to enable a thorough understanding of barriers to them achieving positive outcomes and, using appropriate intervention techniques and direct work, develop their resilience, strengthen family relationships, reduce the risks of their exploitation or going missing and prevent the need for more intensive or specialist services. This post works with families and young people who are involved in/ at risk of entering the Youth Justice System, displaying significant vulnerabilities, going missing or at risk of/being exploited. The role of Young People Support Workers is also to engage with children, young people and families using a holistic approach to include them in assessment, planning, goal setting and decision making. In addition, the role includes working with partner organisations and coordinating and driving a joint family-based approach.

1. Specific duties and responsibilities include:

Be knowledgeable and skilled in identifying the early signs of exploitation, offending, missing episodes or significant vulnerabilities and following agreed local protocols for ensuring children and young people are protected from harm/risk of harm and/or exploitation.

To work with children and young people (aged 10-17) causing anti-social and or criminal behaviour, or those who are at risk of or experiencing criminal or sexual exploitation, going missing or displaying significant vulnerabilities.

To be the primary worker managing a caseload as well as co-working cases alongside Social Workers, Youth Justice Workers and YOT Officers as appropriate, maximizing the time spent on direct work delivering individual support and group interventions (including evidence-based parenting programmes) as part of an action plan for the young person and their families. These cases may be from complex CAF level up to child protection level and the Young People Support Worker will have the knowledge and skills to engage with the young person/family at these levels of need (supported by a Social Worker, YOT Officer for Child In Need and Child Protection/ YOT cases where appropriate).

Preparing a comprehensive, analytical and good quality child and family assessment, including asset plus assessments where appropriate, drawing on recent or existing referrals, assessments and other relevant information sources (including other professionals/support network/ contextual safeguarding information); completing the assessment in the home and ensuring it clearly reflects the voice of the young person and the family.

Acting as a single point of contact for the young person and their family.

Using a relationship-based model of practice, assist the young person and family to define the goals and desired outcomes they want to achieve and support them set the priority order for delivering them.

Using a family focused approach, work with the young person and family to draft the familys action plan Coordinating the familys action plan, tracking and ensuring all contributors are effectively delivering on time.

Leading and facilitating Team Around the Child/Family meetings; capturing agreed actions and ensuring the lead for each action is achieved and timely.

Capturing and recording relevant actions, events and decisions in accordance with case management principles.

Working in partnership with parents to encourage independence and self-reliance and assisting them to develop a consistent and positive approach to parenting, addressing behaviours and overcoming challenges.

Promoting and facilitating parental understanding of a child and young persons needs, particularly adolescent development and risks of exploitation.

Supporting parents to provide an appropriate environment in which children and young people feel safe and which encourages the development of their self-esteem and resilience.

Understanding adult difficulties and the impact they have on children; tailoring support and delivering effective joint working accordingly.

Supporting children and families to become involved in their local community and to access wider opportunities in education, play, work, leisure and volunteering.

Working directly with children/ young people providing appropriate and tailored support to address a range of developmental needs including disruptive and challenging behaviour.

Identifying when a child is a young carer and undertaking a young carers assessment following agreed protocol.

Building effective relationships with key internal and external partners including YOT Officers, Social Workers, voluntary and community organisations, Police and others to ensure effective and appropriate disruption, diversion and intervention for young people at risk of/ or offending, going missing or being exploited.

To co-ordinate and supervise young people who are subject to out of court disposals and facilitate direct/indirect reparation to victims of youth crime through restorative justice processes. Working within a legislative framework.

Operating within relevant policy, legal, ethical and professional boundaries when working with children and families.

Effectively delivering all statutory requirements.

Following local practice standards and protocols. Supervision and continual development.

Actively engaging in individual and group supervision and embed learning in practice. Maintaining up to date knowledge and skills as required by the role.
