Norfolk County Council is excited to offer social work apprenticeship posts starting in January 2023. Our apprenticeship programme offers the opportunity to study for a fully funded social work degree with our partner University of East Anglia, while working for Norfolk County Council and receiving a salary.

Through the 3-year apprenticeship programme you will gain experience of working in a range of social work services within the local authority, including time in both Adult Social Services and Children’s Services. You will also regularly attend university in Norwich for teaching sessions, workshops, seminars and tutorials to develop your skills and knowledge. You will be supported throughout the programme by mentors in the workplace.

Main duties of the job

Entry criteria

We are looking for resilient and motivated applicants who have experience in social care and can demonstrate the skills and knowledge for entry to the social work degree (see PCF - Point of entry to training | www.basw.co.uk)

  • You will need to have at least two years direct experience of working with children and families or adults with care and support needs
  • This is a degree programme so you will need to demonstrate your academic ability by having level 3 qualifications that are equivalent to 96 UCAS points (e.g. 3 A Levels at grade C or equivalent including BTEC, NVQ, Access to HE), or higher.
  • You will also need to have GCSEs in English or English Language and Mathematics at grade C/4 or above, or an approved equivalent such as functional skills level 2.
  • You will need to show all of your original certificates to us as part of the application process. If you cannot find these, you can order replacements online.
  • You will need a driving licence and use of a vehicle - or confirm that you'll be able to travel for work if you do not have a vehicle.

On successful completion of the integrated degree apprenticeship you will be awarded a BA (Hons) in Social Work and guaranteed a post as a newly qualified social worker.

The posts will be based across the county in a range of locations.

Shortlisted applicants will be asked to complete an online written assessment in the week beginning 6th June and invited to an in-person selection event in Norwich on either 27th, 28th June, 18th or 19th July 2022.

Undertake a range of required tasks to meet the apprenticeship standards for the social worker (degree), the PCF and the Social Work England Professional Standards.

Identify risk and safeguarding concerns and escalate immediately where appropriate.

Within the context of relevant social work legislation, develop a knowledge base to make sound professional judgements and build relationships with a variety of individuals and communities, as well as with a wide range of other professionals and agencies.

Working alongside experienced social workers, contribute to a variety of assessments and interventions, which require analysis, planning and review

Under supervision, attend and contribute to multi agency decision making forums including meetings and panels

Under the guidance of a social worker, work with service user and their families with complex problems where statutory intervention is required.

Demonstrate the ability to critically reflect and make decisions within a clear professional code of ethics.

Maintain accurate and complete records in accordance with legislation, protocols and guidelines.

Use technology to communicate appropriately, maintain individuals’ information securely and advise people on how to use assistive technology to promote its use to achieve better outcomes.

The complexity of case work will increase over the three years of the apprenticeship as knowledge and skills develop.
