Job summary

Southend City Council is establishing a new SEND Therapies Service for schools and settings across the council.

The service will deliver universal and targeted support to children and young people (CYP) with a range of speech language and communication needs (SLCN) and provide support to Southend schools and settings in developing exceptional learning opportunities and inclusive learning environments.

We are seeking 6 speech and language therapy assistants to join our innovative team.

Main duties of the job

To deliver high quality targeted interventions to groups of CYP in Southend schools and settings

To work with the Speech and Language Therapist and schools to identify CYP to be included in the groups and to measure their progress.

To train school and early years staff to deliver targeted interventions.

To be involved in universal work, offering preventive packages to CYP and the roll out of training to professionals

To keep accurate, contemporaneous notes, maintain statistics as required and carry out other administrative tasks related ot the service for CYP.

Job Purpose:

To deliver high quality support to children and young people with speech language and communication needs (SLCN) across Southend schools and early years settings.

Provide support to schools and early years settings to improve provision and outcomes for children and young people with SLCN.

Provide modelling and best practice of inclusive approaches and interventions to schools and early years settings, and where appropriate to professionals, partner agencies and families with SEND.

To contribute to service and policy development.

Principal Accountabilities and Responsibilities

Provide high quality support to children and young people with SLCN to access the curriculum and learn as effectively as possible, both in group situations and on their own so that children and young people with SLCN can be successfully educated alongside their peers in a mainstream school.

Provide support to schools and early years settings to promote inclusive practice and improve provision, through developing effective universal and targeted interventions.

Promote a better understanding of children and young peoples individual strengths and needs, promote adjustments to support systems and adaptations to learning environments to improve educational experiences and outcomes.

Use evidence-based interventions and a range of inclusive approaches that meet the needs of children and young people with SEND, modelling best practice to school staff and where appropriate to families and professionals.

Support schools and early years settings with assessment procedures for early identification and intervention (when required).

Maintaining record keeping in relation to individual case work and other team activities, ensuring data is readily available for monitoring, evaluation purposes and future planning.

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of legislation, guidance, and best practice in relation to inclusion and SEND.

To be a point of contact and provide the professional response to queries and advice for schools, early years settings, and providers.

To maintain constructive relationships with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders, specifically with education professionals from a wide range of services across the city.

To participate in staff development, appraisal, and training as appropriate, including continuous professional development.

To participate in the wider development of the service and contribute to service improvement as required.

Work within Southend City Councils safeguarding policy and framework. Monitor and manage potential risk within area of responsibility. Employees should be aware of and are required to act in such a way that promotes the health and well-being of children and young people with SEND and vulnerable learners.
