Job summary
As an Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP), youll be innovative, person-centred and committed to working with adults in a strengths-based way. Working with other social and health care professionals, youll complete assessments and coordinate complex decision-making processes regarding the legal and ethical aspects of detention under the Mental Health Act.
As a qualified Social Worker, Community Psychiatric Nurse or Occupational Therapist, registered with the relevant professional body and holding an AMHP qualification, youll be committed to empathetic, person-centred practice and dedicated to upholding the rights of the individuals youll be assessing. Your sound knowledge of the Mental Health Act and Code of Practice will be evidenced through your successful track record in assessing and mitigating risks to individuals with mental health difficulties. Excellent communication, negotiation and influencing skills are critical for building and maintaining positive relationships with individuals, families, carers and other professionals. Confident at identifying problems, youll be comfortable making decisions and using your knowledge and expertise to apply effective solutions.
Main duties of the job
- Fulfilling the legal responsibilities of the AMHP role within the Mental Health Act whilst taking due regard to minimising risk to self, the people who use our service, and others.
- Co-ordinating the entire assessment under the Mental Health Act from the point of referral to the final completion of the assessment.
Information and Advice:
- Providing advice to colleagues, including consultants, other medical staff, and Council staff from other client groups, on the legal aspects of AMHP work.
Multidisciplinary Working:
- Negotiating with other professionals; using de-escalation skills; making legal representation (attending court at short notice if necessary); co-ordinating complex decision-making processes regarding the legal and ethical aspects of detention under the Mental Health Act; and ensuring the safe admission to hospital or the provision of alternative care arrangements.
- Providing follow-up support under the Mental Health Act, e.g. Nearest Relative County Court Action; reports and attendance at Mental Health Review Tribunals; ensuring copies of reports are appropriately disseminated; ensuring property and animals are secure.
Professional Practice:
- Producing a portfolio of work to demonstrate competence, attending mandatory AMHP training, and producing evidence of AMHP work every year in order to renew AMHP warrant every 5 years.
- Supporting, advising and mentoring AMHP trainees and participating in AMHP Forum discussions/peer supervision.
