An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Derbyshire County Councils Public Health Department to support the delivery of a new Integrated Care System (ICS) programme - Tobacco Dependency Treatment. We are looking to appoint a Health Improvement Advisor to deliver Tobacco Dependency Treatment to pregnant women and partners/household members who are receiving care from Royal Derby Hospital.

Main duties of the job

This is a unique opportunity to join a new, dynamic, and growing service which is looking for individuals with a passion and ability for supporting people to stop smoking. The posts will be based at Royal Derby Hospital working alongside maternity healthcare professionals.

About us

You will require excellent communication and listening skills, with a knowledge of behaviour change and a good understanding of factors affecting health. You will require experience of working independently and as part of a team. A good level of IT literacy will also be required to maintain accurate client records. Knowledge and experience of tobacco dependency would be advantageous for this role.

Job responsibilities

This post will contribute to the health improvement of the population by supporting people to make a lifestyle behaviour change. The post holder will contribute to the delivery of the Live Life Better Derbyshire service. This will involve supporting clients to identify and address their holistic wellbeing needs including the direct provision of weight management, physical activity and smoking cessation support. The service is aimed at individuals aged 16 and above (stop smoking aged 12 and above), and families with children under 16.

This role reports to the Service Manager The role provides a service or support to:

  • Clients of the service and the target population of the service
  • A broad range of partners including health professionals, district & borough councils, voluntary sector, businesses and local communities

Essential

  • Level 2 qualification in Understanding Health Improvement or the willingness to undertake when in post within 6 months
  • NCSCT Level 2 Smoking Cessation Training or willingness to undertake within 6 months when in post (Smoking Cessation only)*

Desirable

  • Level 3 Smoking Cessation Training

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of delivering support, enabling people to make a behaviour change
  • Experience of working with individuals, including vulnerable groups, from within local communities.
  • Experience of devising and delivering a lifestyle intervention (smoking cessation, weight management or physical activity)
  • Experience of delivering training

Desirable

  • Experience of delivering behaviour change intervention
  • in group settings e.g. weight management, smoking cessation or wellbeing support.
  • Experience of facilitating group work
  • Experience of working with families and children

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate with and relate to a wide range of clients being aware of barriers that may prevent a lifestyle change.
  • Working knowledge of motivational interviewing techniques.
  • Understanding the factors affecting health inequalities.
  • Awareness and understanding of health promotion principles and practice.
  • Understanding of partnership working.
  • Exceptional listening skills in order to empathise effectively with clients.
  • Excellent level of IT literacy to ensure accurate recording of information and efficient communications with customers.
