Job summary

Ensure that individuals remain at the heart of their work and they will empower vulnerable adults to make choices and to maintain their own autonomy wherever possible.

Ensure that the needs of family members, carers, groups and providers of care are understood and will work with them towards ensuring that vulnerable adults receive the appropriate support (which is the least restrictive option) whilst recognising the need for intervention at times.

Ensure that vulnerable and/or disadvantaged people are supported appropriately; they will make decisions that are in accordance with relevant policy guidance. They will deploy the correct use of legislation aimed at maintaining the independence of vulnerable adults and assist them to maximising their own abilities and networks of support.

Calderdale Councils Occupational Therapy department are looking for a number of Occupational Therapists to work within the area of Adult Services and Wellbeing, Prevention & Early Help. Suitable for newly qualified and experienced therapists.

Calderdale can offer experience of working in a range of different Occupational Therapy areas and settings including: The front door triage team, equipment and adaptations, assistive technology team, community led support, discharge to assess and assessment bed settings, care package reviews.

We support team working and provide a multi-disciplinary approach to the assessment of adults with a physical or learning disability to keep them happier and healthier at home through equipment and major adaptation provision, as well as contributing to the assessment of care packages through manual handling intervention and supporting the discharge from hospital and assessment beds.

Job responsibilities

1. Ensure that assessments are accurate and that users are able to self-direct the assessment process and make informed decisions.

2. Take a professional lead role in triage, screening and professional assessment of occupational and environmental outcomes for adults.

3. Undertake moving & handling assessments, recommending appropriate equipment and giving guidance to individuals and their carers on safe techniques within the home environment.

4. Ensure that all commissioning is undertaken that provides users with appropriate levels of support whilst further ensuring that the user and council receive best value for money and that services that are committed appropriate reflect eligible needs and take into account available resources.

5. Ensure effective crisis intervention work by drawing on a range of local knowledge and using professional experience to make decisions that uphold autonomy whilst recognising the occupational therapy role for safe intervention.

6. Play a leading role within a range of multi-agency teams to ensure coordinated, appropriate assessments and support that remain person centred and enable users to maintain their independence, achieve their outcomes and play a valued and active part in the community wherever possible.

7. Use legislation, guidance and creative, therapeutic practice to ensure that key concepts and theories in occupational therapy are utilised to ensure the best possible outcomes for adults at risk.

8. Undertake critical continued training as per the professional requirements of the post and in accordance with registration requirements. Occupational Therapists will be expected to proactively engage in post qualification awards and continued professional development of their practice.

9. Undertake work through a duty rota as agreed through Line Management.

Essential

  • Occupational Therapy professional qualification
  • Must be registered with the HCPC.
  • Hold a full UK driving licence;
  • - and have access to a vehicle for work purpose
  • - adjustments can be considered for candidates with a disability

Experience

  • Significant knowledge of the Care Act (2014) and relevant policy guidance with an understanding for practice of the principles and provisions of community care
  • A high level working knowledge of mental capacity legislation and be able to demonstrate this in practice
  • Assess the occupational and environmental needs of individual service users and their carers, following department procedures, in order to identify resources required by individuals and their carers and to be able to make professionals decisions based on assessed needs
  • Ability to use various elements of Information Technology including databases, Word, Excel
  • Knowledge of sources of oppression, disadvantage and discrimination and their impact at a structural and individual level in society
  • Understand concepts of choice and control and enable users to self directed the assessment process and the support that they receive
  • In depth knowledge of occupational therapy and intervention theories around home solutions
  • Working within an adult therapy setting
