Full Time 37 hours per week

This is a countywide service, and will involve travel.

The Multi-Sensory Impairment Service are seeking flexible and enthusiastic individuals who have a passion for working with children.

We work directly with children and young people who are registered Deafblind and assessed as requiring specialist one to one support.

Our support covers the following areas:

  • Orientation and mobility
  • Communication
  • Learning and development
  • Complex Healthcare

About you

We are always interested in people who have current relevant qualifications such as British Sign Language or experience with communication techniques.

We will support you in your on-going development within the role, providing comprehensive training with a child centred approach. You will support children to reach agreed personal goals and outcomes through engaging them to make choices and decisions.

  • You should have a willingness to work towards additional qualifications such as British Sign Language.

Main duties of the job

We are looking to recruit to our team to provide support for deafblind children and young people both in their education setting and in a social capacity, supporting them to access to a wide range of activities. As a service we aim to provide consistency for the young people we support and work closely with other professionals to provide this. We cover a variety of sessions including; school day, evenings, weekends and school holidays.

The role of an MSW will include supporting our children and young people in all aspects of daily living. Many of our Children and young people have additional needs beyond their deafblind status and a caring nature, respecting their privacy and dignity while delivering personal care and supporting with medication is essential.

The salary range for this role is £25,992 to £27,711 per annum

Attracting enhanced rates of pay for weekend working, hourly rate £20.20 rising to £21.54 for Saturdays and £26.94 rising to £28.72 for Sundays and bank holidays.

  • A good knowledge on conditions and medical needs of children
  • and young people with a visual impairment, hearing impairment and/ or dual sensory loss.
  • Experience in managing behaviour that challenges including de-escalation and distraction.
  • A good understanding of current legislation affecting children and
  • young people.
  • Experience of working in a challenging and pressurised environment.
  • Experience of direct work with families.

Desirable

  • Experience of working within an educational setting.
  • Understand the impact on families and issues affecting children and
  • young people with additional needs, including an awareness of medical conditions that can be secondary to deafblind, for example Epilepsy.
  • Knowledge of the Framework of Assessment.
  • Experience of implementing a Total Communication approach within your practice.

  • Diploma Level 3 in Child Development or equivalent Qualification and willing to undertake Level 4.
  • British Sign Language Level one with the motivation and willingness to achieve Level two & Level three qualification on appointment.
  • Awareness of Makaton.
  • Safeguarding Children and Young People Level 3.
  • Numeracy and literacy skills to GCSE level A-C or equivalent.

Desirable

  • Cued speech.
  • Diploma Level 4 or be willing to undertake.
  • Training in physical intervention, e.g. Team Teach or willing to achieve this on appointment.
  • Willingness to undertake training according to the needs of the post.
