Job summary

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) plays a vital frontline role in delivering safe, effective, and compassionate pre-hospital care within secure and emergency environments. The post holder will work as part of a double-crewed ambulance, responding to emergency and non-emergency incidents, assessing and managing patients within their scope of practice, and supporting multidisciplinary clinical teams.

This role requires a high level of professionalism, adaptability, and clinical competence to ensure patient safety, operational readiness, and compliance with regulatory and organisational standards.

Main duties of the job

  • Work as part of a double-crewed emergency ambulance with senior clinicians and/or act as clinical lead when appropriate
  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency incidents with due regard to patient safety, comfort, and road traffic regulations
  • Conduct dynamic risk assessments at incident scenes, identifying safety concerns and resource requirements
  • Physically manoeuvre and lift patients using approved manual handling techniques and equipment
  • Request additional support where required before undertaking patient manoeuvres
  • Complete all required operational documentation, including vehicle and equipment checks
  • Ensure vehicles are roadworthy, fully equipped, and checked prior to the start of each shift
  • Maintain vehicle and equipment cleanliness in line with Infection Prevention and Control policies
  • Identify and report equipment faults immediately
  • Ensure safe and effective disposal of all clinical waste
  • Adhere to DrPA Secure policies, procedures, and operational standards

  • Full UK driving licence with no more than 3 penalty points
  • Emergency Driving qualification (e.g. Blue Light)
  • Enhanced DBS with barred list check for Adults and Children
  • Recent experience working in frontline emergency care
  • Evidence of satisfactory manual handling training
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision
  • Flexible approach to shift work in line with service demand
  • Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team

Operational Duties

  • Assist other healthcare professionals in delivering care beyond your scope of practice where required
  • Interact with and reassure distressed, emotional, or mentally unwell patients in accordance with the Mental Capacity Act and Mental Health Act
  • Undertake clinically appropriate assessments and interventions within the EMT scope of practice
  • Administer permitted medicines in line with relevant clinical guidelines
  • Reassess patients throughout transport and respond appropriately to changes in condition
  • Use recognised clinical decision-making tools where appropriate

Documentation and Record Keeping

  • Maintain a high standard of clinical documentation at all times
  • Accurately record patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes
  • Complete all vehicle and shift documentation prior to and during shifts
  • Submit accurate incident reports via RADAR and SONAR systems
  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality in line with the Data Protection Act and Caldicott Principles
  • Ensure secure storage of all clinical documentation in accordance with Medicare information governance policies

Communication

  • Communicate sensitive medical information to patients and relatives in a calm, professional, and reassuring manner
  • Liaise effectively with colleagues, healthcare professionals, and operational managers
  • Maintain effective communication with NHS Ambulance Service control rooms when required
  • Escalate clinical or operational concerns appropriately, including delays in patient transfers

Disclosure and Barring Service Check & CTC Clearance

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and requires an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check with barred list information.

The successful applicant will also be required to successfully complete Counter Terrorism Clearance (CTC).
