Job summary

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Theatre Sister / Charge Nurse (Scrub) to join our General and Vascular Team within Main Theatres at The London Clinic. This is a senior role for an accomplished practitioner who thrives in a fast-paced, complex surgical environment. You will lead and coordinate theatre activity, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality perioperative care while providing visible clinical leadership to a skilled multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

As the senior scrub lead for the speciality, you will work closely with consultants across a range of General and Vascular procedures, supporting both elective and emergency cases. You will also play a key role in developing staff capability, maintaining clinical standards, and contributing to the ongoing enhancement of our theatre services.

The Role: This senior role requires an experienced and confident Scrub Nurse to provide strong clinical and managerial leadership within our General and Vascular theatre team. The post holder will be responsible for coordinating and supporting the delivery of high-quality perioperative care, ensuring that surgical lists run efficiently while maintaining the highest clinical standards. You will lead by example, supporting a multidisciplinary team and fostering a culture of safety, professionalism, and continuous improvement. Key Responsibilities Clinical Leadership

  • Lead the daily coordination of theatre activities for general and vascular lists, ensuring safe and effective patient care.
  • Scrub for a range of complex surgical procedures, maintaining high clinical standards.
  • Support consultant surgeons and theatre teams in delivering efficient, evidence-based practice.
  • Ensure all equipment, consumables, and instruments are prepared and used safely.
  • Promote infection prevention, safety compliance, and adherence to AFPP and CQC standards.
  • Team and Service Management
  • Provide visible leadership and act as a clinical role model for the theatre team.
  • Line manage, mentor, and appraise staff, supporting training and professional development.
  • Manage staffing levels and skill mix to ensure effective team performance.
  • Contribute to recruitment, induction, and ongoing staff engagement initiatives.
  • Governance and Quality
  • Lead audits and contribute to quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
  • Support investigations, incident reviews, and implementation of action plans.
  • Maintain accurate records, documentation, and compliance with all clinical policies and standards.
  • Skills and Experience:
  • Registered Nurse (NMC) or ODP (HCPC) with significant scrub experience in General and/or Vascular Surgery.
  • Experienced in leading a theatre team within a complex surgical environment.
  • Strong communicator, able to influence, motivate, and support others.
  • Knowledge of governance, risk management, and quality improvement processes.
  • Desirable:
  • Advanced Scrub Practitioner qualification and/or SFA
  • Experience in robotic or minimally invasive surgery.
