Job summary
We are seeking a part-time (0.6WTE) consultant psychiatrist to provide cover and leadership to one of the inpatient wards. The ideal candidate would have a neuropsychiatry or rehabilitation background, but further training in these areas could be negotiated at interview. The service is small, friendly and dynamic, with a strong emphasis on rehabilitation as opposed to long-term care and a commitment to this approach is as important as qualifications on paper. There is a second part-time doctor on site. Out of hours there is a medical on-call but physical health emergencies are covered through the local GP service and NHS 111 with occasional phone advice from the RC.
The salary is competitive and Priory offers an additional package of benefits (Priory Perks, which can be used for a discount on weekly shopping amongst other savings).
Main duties of the job
The service is supported by dedicated occupational therapy and physiotherapy teams and the local GP practice visits the site twice weekly. There are established nursing teams on each ward, with experienced ward managers. Psychology cover is currently contracted out to a local service, although we are aiming to recruit a full time neuropsychologist. Behavioural monitoring (SASNOS, MOAS) is completed by assistant psychologists.
We welcome informal discussions and prospective candidates visiting the site when considering applying for the post.

Job description
Job responsibilities
- Providing leadership to the multi-disciplinary team. The consultant psychiatrist holds overall responsibility for patient management, but should routinely take the opinions of the full MDT into account when making decisions about clinical care. Where there is a disagreement within the team the psychiatrist should take the lead in discussing this further and invite further opinions where appropriate. The ethos of the service is strongly rehabilitative, and the psychiatrist should continuously seek to advance patient care towards a community placement, whether this is a return to independent or supported living or residential or continuing care.
- Owning and taking responsibility for the legal framework (and any required paperwork) surrounding each patient, whether this be the mental health act or deprivation of liberty safeguards. Where patients are informal this should be kept under review and involve behavioural contracts when appropriate.
- Leading the weekly MDT ward round.
- Authorising leave within and from the hospital grounds for each patient detained under a legal framework. Leading the MDT risk assessment of authorised leave.
- Clerking new patients on admission.
- Setting initial observation levels and leading MDT reviews of these. Reviewing all patients receiving continuous observations at least weekly.
- Prescribing medication where appropriate for an ABI caseload.
- Liaising with the GP around physical health care and prescribing.
- Participation in a quiet 1:2 on-call rota. Attendance on site out of hours is an extremely rare occurrence but RCs should live within a reasonable driving distance from the hospital.
- Preparation of reports (where required) and attendance at:
- CPA and other review meetings
- Mental Health Tribunals and Managers Hearings
- CHC and DST meetings
- Best interests meetings
- Family meetings
- Coroners inquests
- Triaging referred patients and assessing where appropriate.
- Maintaining full GMC registration, RCPsych membership, AC and Section 12 approval. Participating in an active peer group and maintaining RCPsych Good Standing for CPD.
- Maintaining full medical indemnity cover (can be arranged through Priorys in-house scheme with the MPS if wished).
- Completion of all Priory mandatory training.
- Participation in professional supervision.
- Completion of an annual revalidation appraisal from a Priory approved appraiser.
