Job summary

This is a unique opportunity for career development in a hospital where extensive medical support is provided to our patients.

Main duties of the job

You will work alongside a Consultant Psychiatrist covering the 17 bed acute service. During working hours, you will be responsible for admitting new patients, attending ward reviews and reviewing the mental and physical health of patients throughout admission and at appropriate intervals.

Each patient is reviewed in a weekly multi-disciplinary setting.

You will support the Consultant and MDT with assessment, appropriate investigation, diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Priory Brain Injury Services (PBIS) provide specialised care pathways within the Priory for people with acquired brain injury (ABI). PBIS has been successfully delivering neurobehavioral rehabilitation and making a positive difference to peoples lives since 1985 to people with ABI, whose challenging behaviour prevents attainment of their maximum rehabilitation potential and personal autonomy.

Elm Park is a 17 bedded Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit in Ardleigh which specialises in the assessment, care and treatment of adult residents (18+ years) with an acquired brain injury. The main unit is also linked to Elm House and Elm Cottage which offer open community rehabilitation services for men and women with a traumatic or acquired brain injury.

Job responsibilities

  • Undertake psychiatric and external assessments for clients referred to the unit to determine the appropriate level of care to be provided, under the direction and supervision of the Consultant Psychiatrist, and work with the unit multidisciplinary team to ensure delivery of the Care Programme.
  • Prepare discharge summaries, reports and other associated documentation as necessary e.g. for CPA meetings, as directed and supervised by the Consultant Psychiatrist.
  • Participation in learning activities and supervision.
  • Participation in Clinical Governance activities, and account for contracted hours utilised in research, Continuing Professional Development and other non-clinical duties as necessary and in a timely manner.
  • Working effectively with colleagues to ensure that clients have access to appropriate medical cover at all times, which will require participation in an on-call rota for the site.
  • The post holder will be expected to support the GP in delivering physical health care and emergency treatment to patients in complex care.
  • To support the RMO and GP in delivering a consistently high standard of medical care to all patients on site. Be responsible for inducting new RMPs and providing cover for them when they are on compensatory rest periods.
  • Share responsibility for taking bloods with the site phlebotomist and RMO as necessary.
  • Arrange appropriate clinical tests and investigations and take responsibility for chasing up results and acting on them in a timely manner.
  • Ensure physical observations by ward staff are carried out in accordance with medical instructions. Review physical observation findings and act upon them in a clinically appropriate manner.

Knowledge/Education/Skills/Experience

Essential

  • This post requires an MB.BS or equivalent, you will also need to be GMC registered and licensed to practice. We would also
  • expect you to be in good standing with the Royal College of Psychiatrists for CPD and have an appraisal or RITA in the last
  • year.
  • The consultant will hold a CCST / CCT (or equivalent) in the relevant areas of Psychiatry and will have experience of working
  • in an inpatient settings with people with significant mental health difficulties.
