Job summary

As Medical Lead you will provide professional medical leadership for the service(s) in collaboration with the Service Manager/Group Deputy Medical Director. You will be responsible for clinical oversight, leadership, and management of the service(s), ensuring the delivery of excellent care by all clinicians.

Main duties of the job

As Medical Lead will play a key role in driving continuous improvements in care, promoting clinical governance, and participating in education and training programs.

Key Responsibilities:

Delivering Results/Functional Responsibilities:

  • Provide professional leadership for the service and foster a culture of continuing professional development and excellence in patient care.
  • Be available and responsive to the clinical workforce, including availability outside of normal working hours and participation in escalation processes.
  • Oversee the clinical rostering of the service and sign off on rotas when necessary.
  • Offer expert advice to the Service/Operational Manager, Lead Nurse, and clinicians throughout the service.
  • Represent the company at local levels on professional clinical and corporate issues, developing partnerships and sharing best practices.
  • Provide professional leadership for the planning and strategic direction of the service, securing support from staff and stakeholders.
  • Represent the company at local meetings with partners, commissioners, NHSE, CQC, and stakeholder groups, integrating the service into the local healthcare system.
  • Act as the line manager for the medical workforce, supporting and equipping them to perform their clinical duties effectively.
  • Act as the professional and managerial lead for the medical workforce within the service, aligning with the organization's vision and values.
  • Support medical professional regulatory processes, including compliance, revalidation, fitness to practice, and disciplinary procedures.

  • Clinical Standards and Governance:
  • Maintain oversight of clinical governance and quality metrics, attending Service Clinical Governance meetings.
  • Provide assurance to the Regional Leadership Team and Executive Operational Delivery Team.
  • Investigate and manage serious incidents, complaints, and other untoward incidents, embedding associated learning within the service.
  • Provide leadership in safeguarding and champion arrangements for the safeguarding of vulnerable patients.
  • Escalate concerns regarding an individual's clinical practice, including safeguarding and allegations, to the Regional Medical Director/Safeguarding Team.
  • Ensure compliance with Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulations for the service.
  • Review and update clinical guidelines for the service, including electronic versions.
  • Engaging People/Key Working Relationships:
  • Communicate regularly with the clinical team through clinical bulletins, team meetings, and training events.
  • Foster a culture of team working, innovation in patient care, and evaluation of outcomes.
  • Develop effective relationships with education providers and professional bodies to align service and training needs.
  • Support engagement with local deaneries and the training of GPRs.
  • Management & Leadership:
  • Oversee recruitment, induction, ongoing support, performance management, and workforce planning for the medical staff.
  • Manage clinical performance, providing feedback, conducting appraisals, and supervision.
  • Ensure compliance with professional and statutory regulations and employment and training requirements.
  • Facilitate revalidation and clinical supervision for medical staff.
  • Support the medical workforce in working productively, monitoring clinical productivity and effectiveness.
  • Manage appointments, performance, competence, discipline, attendance, and health issues of clinicians.

  • Ensure high-level performance of the service.
  • Value and incorporate the perspectives of all staff in management decision-making.
