Specialist Stop Smoking Practitioner - Pregnancy

Job summary

Main duties of the job

In this role, youll work independently to deliver personalised smoking cessation support to pregnant clients and their families, from pregnancy through to three months post-partum. Youll collaborate closely with midwifery teams, Public Health, and other partners to ensure high-quality, evidence-based interventions in line with NCSCT and NICE guidance. Key responsibilities include developing care pathways, delivering training, issuing pharmacotherapy, and maintaining accurate records. Youll also contribute to service improvement, analyse maternity data, and support peer-led groups to prevent relapse. The ability to drive and access to a car are essential to the role.

Your key responsibilities will be:

Work independently, being accountable for all aspects of your own work.

Support other ABL colleagues working with pregnant women as appropriate.

Take an active part in Best Practice development meetings for ABL staff working with pregnant women.

Liaise closely with the Public Health consultant midwife and the Head of Service to enable constant service improvements.

Work within the maternity department and alongside the specialist and community midwifery team in providing individualised smoking cessation support for pregnant clients and their partners / families. This will continue through pregnancy and up to 3 months post-partum. Therefore, it is essential that good relationships are developed and maintained.

Develop partnerships with FNP and Health visitors and agree robust care pathways.

Develop partnerships with the fertility clinic staff and support with education regarding smoking and validation.

Take an active part in meetings regarding the ongoing service and innovative service development.

Motivate and empower clients to make changes to address their addiction by using tact, diplomacy, and empathy.

Liaise and develop care pathways for clients who receive peer support from maternity voices and Koala.

Respond effectively to referrals within stated timescales self-referrals from the individuals, and those from colleagues /other workers.

Deliver evidence-based stop smoking interventions, these include one to one, drop in, group sessions, telephone, or on-line support, these must be in accordance with the NCSCT Standard Treatment Programme for pregnant women and partners, along with NICE guidance.

Provide a high quality, efficient and cost-effective services throughout a diverse range of community settings including community maternity hubs.

Lead peer support group sessions for successful quitters following intervention to prevent relapse.

Provide evidence-based education in all aspects of smoking cessation and behavioural change as well on-going motivational support.

Work with individuals to set realistic sustainable goals. To understand the analysis of maternity data identifying local need to inform local service need and service development.

Deliver training sessions to the midwifery team.

Issue pharmacotherapy as required to clients.

Deal with potential emotional situations.

Ensure all client and service records are up to date, accurate and satisfy the ABL Health documentation policies.

You will be a motivated, passionate, organised, and proactive individual with knowledge of health and care support.

This role will be demanding as services develop and should become integrated in all settings. It will be essential that you use your own judgement to prioritise competing demands and workload effectively to specific timescales.
