pa + £745.16 a month on call allowance (for each month worked) +
£2,162 pro-rata London Weighting
This is an ideal opportunity for doctors with a special interest in palliative medicine offering a full time, fixed term contract. One post will be for 6 months to 1 year from 1st February 2023 including full on call rota. The second post will be from 1st February until 3rd October 2023, this inclused on call from August 2023 only. This may be suitable for someone wishing to gain experience in palliative medicine with a view to applying for a higher training scheme in palliative medicine or a related specialty.
St Josephs is a large 28-bedded hospice in Hackney, East London, with an inner-city, ethnically diverse population. There are excellent modern facilities including a busy community team, day hospice, complementary therapies centre, bereavement service, access to a multi-lingual advocacy team and a purpose-built education centre and library
The successful applicants will join a team of 2 Consultants and 7 junior doctor colleagues including 2 Speciality Doctors, 2 SpR trainees in Palliative Medicine 2 clinical fellow and 1 IMT trainee. Opportunities for development and career progression will be supported in line with the applicants level of training and personal development goals.

time, the Community Palliative Care Team manages approximately 150 or more
palliative care patients in Newham, Tower Hamlets and City & Hackney. St
Josephs also has areas for day services and community outreach, bereavement
services for a wider area of north and north-east London, information services
both in the hospice and in the community, a library, a busy education center
and facilities for outpatient reviews / clinics conducted by the medical and
nursing teams.
City
& Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Newham the boroughs visited by the Hospices
Community Palliative Care Team - remain three of the most deprived in
socio-economic terms in the country. The inner-city population is ethnically
diverse. Language and potential cultural barriers add to the challenge and
satisfaction of working in this vibrant part of East London.
The
hospice has a library and busy education centre, which supports both
undergraduate and postgraduate medical teaching. The hospice usually hosts between 400 and 500
medical students per year from across three of Londons medical schools.
Key service developments within the last 5
years include:
(i)
Launching Hospice access to
the east London Patient Record (eLPR) for access to shared care records. As far
as we know, we were the first hospice to achieve this connectivity to view the
shared care record across such a wide range of different organisations.
(ii)
Development of a multi
professional Triage and Referrals team called the First Contact Team,
changing the St Josephs Hospice referral system from a paper to a telephone
based process, accepting referral from both healthcare professionals and
non-clinicians (including carers and patients themselves). This aims to ease
access to hospice services for all appropriate patients.
(iii)
Developing a 24/7 support and
advice telephone line for palliative care patients.
