Job summary
An
exciting opportunity has arisen at The Christie Pathology Partnership (CPP) for
a Band 7 Clinical Cytogeneticist to join our Cytogenetics department. Clinical
Cytogeneticist will work as part of a team to provide an effective and high
quality genomic analysis service to aid the diagnosis and treatment of patients
with leukaemia and other cancers for Greater Manchester, the North West of
England and other customers of the Christie Pathology Partnership.

Main duties of the job
The purpose of the role is to:
To apply
specialist scientific knowledge in cancer cytogenomics in the interpretation
and reporting of, often complex, genetic information to clinicians and in
producing interpretive reports for authorisation by a senior Clinical
Cytogeneticist
To participate
in laboratory and quality management processes to ensure the effective
operation of the department and to maintain the service to standards expected
by local policies, professional guidelines and UKAS accreditation, include
writing and reviewing SOPs, participation in internal audit and external EQA.
The post holder will participate on
a rotational basis specific duties covering; duty scientist role including effective
specimen handling, interpretation of referral reasons, deciding test and
culture regimes, allocation of duties and dealing with telephone enquiries;
managing FISH workflow on both liquid and FFPE preparations.
The postholder will supervise
and provide scientific support to technical staff.
The role will involve
contributing to the diagnostic workload for G-band chromosome analysis of blood
and bone marrow preparations.
To participate in SNP
array analysis and interpretation, as part of a new service currently in
development in the department.

Job responsibilities
Undertake technical and analytical procedures
for a range of investigations sometimes of a complex or specialist nature.
Routine tests will be in accordance with laboratory policies and protocols but
some referrals may be non-routine and not be covered by standard procedures.
Define cytogenetic investigations required to
meet clinical need. This will include the selection of tests, equipment and
levels of analysis appropriate to sample type, reason for referral and urgency.
Initiate further investigations in response to additional clinical information
or the results of primary tests.
Implement laboratory procedures for the
checking, interpretation, preparation of standard and non-standard reports and
reporting of results for final authorisation by the Consultant or Principal
Cytogeneticists.
Interpret and explain results, with advice on
further action, for clinical management of patients. Access relevant sources of
information to aid interpretation. Collate information from successive sample
records to ensure the most appropriate testing of samples and interpretation.
Present verbal reports at local Haematology
MDT meetings to support the coordination of clinical information for the timely
diagnosis of leukaemia and related disorders, as directed by the Service
Managers and in rotation with other scientists.
Implement record keeping policies to maintain
an accurate record of work undertaken, including both hard copy and
computerised records. Assist with the retrieval and presentation of data as
required.
Support the in maintaining a quality service
and meeting requirements of clinical governance. In particular, participate in
performance monitoring, internal and external quality assurance procedures and
internal audit.
Participate in the evaluation, development
and implementation of new protocols and diagnostic techniques.
Participate in relevant research and
development as required by the Service Managers, within the limitations of
diagnostic priorities.
