Job summary

The Clinic Lead plays a pivotal role in leading the Outpatient team and managing the efficient and safe running of our Outpatient services.

The Outpatient Service is staffed by a mixed clinical team of registered; Ophthalmic Nurses, ODPs and non-registered; Ophthalmic Technicians, Senior Ophthalmic Assistants, and Ophthalmic Assistants, and students, made up of contracted and flexible bank staff. These staff, including the Clinic Lead, rotate across the service to also cover Admission/Discharge and Theatre duties.

Interviews will take place on the 19th June 2025.

Main duties of the job

The Clinic Lead manages a range of clinics: diagnostics, pre- and post-operative assessments and laser procedures. The Clinic Lead is responsible for ensuring that high quality patient care and assistance to a range of clinicians: Consultants, Optometrists, Nurse Consultant and Advanced Nurse Practitioners is given, along with assurances to the Clinical Service Manager, Clinical Director and Operations Director.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Operational Management

  • To lead diagnostic and technological outpatient service requirements, including troubleshooting, updates and quality assurance, linking with manufacturers or central team/external resources.
  • To provide leadership for a mixed team of employees, including bank staff that cover Outpatient activity within the service. The post holder will have line management responsibility of team members.
  • To clinically triage referrals for the services offered at Newmedica Worcester & Bromsgrove.
  • To manage the operational aspects of the Outpatient service, including oversight of staff; rota, recruitment and competence.
  • To aid management in the processes needed to foster good practice in clinical governance such as audit and continuous professional development.
  • To identify any risks and ensure that appropriate action is taken, in accordance with Newmedica Risk Management policy, providing expert advice and focusing on principles of a learning organisation.

Staff Leadership and Recruitment

  • To support the recruitment, induction and training of new Outpatient staff, participating in recruitment and selection.
  • Document competencies and assist in the development of best practice guidelines for the service.
  • To support coordination in effective deployment of staff to different types of Outpatient activity as per service demand.

Education and Training

  • To ensure all staff receive an effective orientation and induction to the Outpatient service, with supervision arranged as required and progression monitored.
  • To signpost Newmedica employed and bank staff to useful training opportunities and provide advice on CPD, linking with the Training Lead and Newmedica learning & development team.
  • Receive supervision as part of own professional development.
  • Maintain up to date skills and knowledge and maintain awareness of professional issues.

Research, Audit & Governance

  • To participate in local and departmental audits, have oversight of their completion, and ensure findings are shared across the service and actions implemented.
  • To participate in and advise on governance processes within the service.
  • Evaluate service delivery; identify areas for improvement and initiate change.
