Job summary
We are looking for a Senior Ophthalmic Technician to join our brand new site in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire due to open in November 2024. This will be 40 hours over 5 days per week including cover on weekends on a rota basis.
Main duties of the job
Senior Ophthalmic Technicians play an integral role in the delivery of clinical services by performing detailed clinical tests, supporting the clinical assessment of each patient and ensuring that all patients understand their treatment. The role will lead the Clinic team, overseeing the work of the Ophthalmic Assistants, providing advice, support and training as required, supporting their growth and development by signing off the competency framework as they progress through training.
The role will also support the effective running of theatre as and when required, under the guidance of the Lead Theatre Practitioner.
Senior Ophthalmic Technicians work in small team with Consultant Ophthalmologists, Optometrists and Clinic Assistants. You'll be responsible for the safe, effective and efficient functioning of diagnostic services including ophthalmic assessments of the structure and function of the eye, using a variety of clinical equipment. You'll maintain high professional standards of ophthalmic imaging and investigation services to patients by performing, verifying and recording results of clinical testing with absolute integrity.

ROLE SUMMARY

The role will work as part of a small team with Consultant Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Ophthalmic Assistants, Nurses and Administration Staff. Alongside clinic assistants, they also contribute to the smooth and efficient running of the clinic and ensuring patient records are maintained accurately. The role will also support the effective running of theatre as and when required, under the guidance of the Lead Theatre Practitioner.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary responsibility for delivering clinical services, including:
- Responsible for the safe, effective and efficient functioning of diagnostic services including ophthalmic assessments of the structure and function of the eye, using a variety of clinical equipment.
- Provide relevant support, teaching and guidance to Ophthalmic Assistants within the facility, supporting their growth and development by signing off the competency framework as they progress through training. It should be noted that necessary sign offs will need to be sought from registered professionals for some competencies (e.g. drops, tonometry, pachymetry)
- Managing the relationship with the patient and conveying information to agreed protocols to them, ensuring that exceptional customer service is delivered.
- Management of patient data; ensuring availability, required accuracy and confidentiality. Maintain high professional standards of ophthalmic imaging and investigation services to patients by performing, verifying and recording results of clinical testing with absolute integrity.
- Provide support and assistance to both optometrists and ophthalmologists to ensure optimal patient flow and provide a high level of patient care.
- Prepare and position patients for diagnostic procedures and surgical treatment including transfer from trolley/Wheelchair.
- Undertaking other ad hoc and administrative tasks as required ensuring the smooth running of the clinic.
- Appropriate escalation of process, clinical, equipment, quality or infection risk issues.
- Committed to continued professional development and clinical governance, including participating in appraisal process, completion of mandatory training and clinical audits and research as required.
- Assist with general cleaning, tidiness and presentation of the department environment.
