We have an exciting opportunity for a General Practitioner to join our team at HMP Isle of Wight. HMP Isle of Wight is a category B male training prison. Located on a small island, and is around 8 minutes from St Marys Hospital and 26 minutes away from Cowes Ferry Terminal. You will be working closely with the on site Lead GP, GPs and ANPs to deliver care to around 1100 patients. This role would suit a GP who is looking to delivery end to end care, a large proportion of the patients have long term conditions and polypharmacy needs including cardiac, diabetes and asthma care. There is specific admin time built into the role with around 60% of time being patients facing.

Hours

core hours of operation are 07:30 -17:30

Salary

This position is full time 40 hours a week and you will receive an annual salary up to £120,000 per annum depending on experience. We can also consider applicants who are looking for part time

£3,000 (£1,000 in 6 months of service, £1,000 after 12 months and £1,000 after 24 months of service - conditions apply).

Main duties of the job

As a member of the Multi-Disciplinary Team, you will

  • Provide clinical assessment and diagnosis to patients requirements and make timely decisions regarding future management
  • Prescribing for patients, regularly review medications and monitor repeat prescriptions
  • Provide a highly specialist resource to other members of the healthcare team at site, as well as the patients you work with having active involvement in clinical governance and effectiveness activities. including diagnosis, investigation, treatment and referral as appropriate in line with guidelines and pathways. Including prescribing for patients, regularly review medications and monitor repeat prescriptions We recognise training and development is key, therefore we provide a training portal to facilitate your needs as well as have an in-depth induction for all staff whether you have experience of working in prisons or not. You will gain insight into Mental Health and Substance Misuse, as well as the opportunity to work towards your RCGP level 2.

Qualifications required
  • MBChB or MBBS
  • Inclusion on the GMC Register and GP Performers List
  • Evidence of engagement with annual appraisal
  • Experience working as a General Practitioner in community general practice
  • Ability to work with patients with a history of substance misuse

Health in Justice deliver Healthcare in a Prison setting comparable with a Community GP Practice. There are Primary care and Mental health nursing staff, Healthcare assistants, recovery workers and administrators all on site. We are looking for a talented General Practitioner to join our team at HMP Isle of Wight working 2 sessions a week (although we can be flexible with differing requests).

If you are new to offender health, we will create a suitable induction package to ensure you are equipped for this exciting role. If you have not previously engaged with secure environments, your transferable communication skills will help and you may need training and development to work confidently in some unfamiliar areas of practice.

You will be offered Substance Misuse and other offender health specific courses if needed. You may work in one main site alongside other sites and option to work remotely to keep a variety of skill mix and practice in your portfolio, which may range across security categories from high to low/open and populations from young offenders to elderly care for both male and female patients as you are able. We offer a competitive annual salary plus payment of MDU/MPS subscription and CPD days. Furthermore, should you wish there may be opportunities for extra shifts.
