We are looking to speak with HCPC Registered Medical Microbiology/Infection Science Biomedical Scientists who have experience of providing a high-quality service and have a passion for mentoring and sharing your knowledge.

Our Infection Science Team operate across Microbiology, Virology and Molecular testing and we have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join our team. This position is based in Virology, Serology & Molecular testing including SYNLAB Molecular Unit, working in a laboratory which takes a leading technological approach with a state-of-the-art automated track and analytical systems.

SYNLAB UK & Ireland have extensive experience of working in partnership with the NHS to deliver and improve pathology services through its existing pathology joint ventures - including Southwest Pathology Services (SPS).

Our team at SPS have been fundamental to the principle of making a positive difference to healthcare in Somerset for 10 years. We hold ISO15189 UKAS accreditation and are an HCPC approved training Laboratory.

Main duties of the job

In addition to a competitive pay structure, we offer a joining bonus of up to £5,000. The successful candidate would operate at our Hub laboratory in Taunton.

If you have the following qualifications and skills and feel that you could hit the ground running then wed love to hear from you:

Greater than 2 years post HCPC registration with experience of working in a Clinical Infection Science laboratory at post graduate level in a busy Virology / Serology/ Molecular department.
Experience working with automated serology and molecular testing platforms such as Beckman Coulter DxA, AU5800, Roche, Hologic and GeneXpert
A strong virology / serology background including knowledge of screening programmes such as Infectious Diseases in Pregnancy.
A good understanding of Sexual Health Testing processes.

To operate at Band 6, you will also demonstrate experience to post graduate diploma level e.g.: Specialist portfolio.

Job responsibilities

· To be able to rotate through all areas of a Laboratory as required (dependent on qualifications, experience and training), to perform all designated duties in accordance with local working practices, to maintain high Professional standards and conform to Health and Safety regulations.

· To perform and interpret routine and specialist Biomedical investigations autonomously to provide patients results within agreed quality standards of service delivery and turnaround times under the supervision of senior staff.

· Work independently, implement and propose changes to procedures for own work area. May be a lead specialist.

· To continue with personal development through academic and/or practical experience.

· To provide professional leadership and training to Basic Grade, Trainee BMS, Associate Practitioners (equivalent grades) and Medical Laboratory Assistants.

· To maintain the standards of conduct required by the Health Professions Council to practice as a registered Biomedical Scientist.

· To provide technical advice to clinicians as to the appropriateness of tests and timescales.

· Utilise the laboratory LIMS, Q-Pulse quality monitoring system and other application software according to authorised protocols including assisting in computer data entry in all areas of the laboratory, document review, non-conformance review and quality assurance processes.

· Communicate efficiently, courteously and with clarity at all times, whether face to face, telephone or electronic methods referring enquiries to senior staff where appropriate. Matters being communicated may include complex information and/or results.

· Attend and participate positively in laboratory and other meetings as directed by Laboratory senior staff.

· As directed by senior laboratory staff, plan and prioritise work allocations, training plans, audits of both yourself and junior staff, responding appropriately to the needs of routine and urgent activities.

· Encourage active participation in continuous professional development and support the introduction of new technologies and / or systems by being a change advocate.

· Report all incidents and adverse events to senior staff.

· Demonstrate on going competency against training plans and participate positively in CPD (continuous professional development) activities.

Essential:

· HPC State Registration as a Biomedical Scientist with a Biomedical degree or equivalent and evidence of CPD.

· Experience to post graduate diploma level e.g.: Specialist portfolio, BBTS.

· At least 2 years relevant experience post HPC registration as a BMS with on-going specialist training.

· Other mandated qualifications specific to the role e.g. NHSCSP Certificate in Cervical Cytology.

· Able to work independently, implements and proposes changes to procedures for own work area. May be a lead specialist.

· Advanced working knowledge of Biomedical techniques and practices.

· High degree of accuracy, numeracy, interpretive skills and good problem-solving skills.

· Good knowledge and experience of LIMS and computer applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Statistical Packages.

· An advanced understanding of basic theoretical and practical Biomedical Sciences and technically adept at majority of routine and advanced laboratory procedures.

· Ability to communicate with a wide range of levels of staff.

· Ability to communicate complex technical information accurately verbally, written and electronically.

· Well-developed interpersonal and team working abilities.

· Ability to disseminate scientific knowledge locally, regionally and nationally.

· Ability to analyse and technically interpret complex test results.

· Ability to effectively manage own time, able to prioritise work for self and others and able to plan activities within area of work.

· Ability to adapt efficiently to change.

· High degree of dexterity required.

· Able to concentrate for extended periods of time.
