Job summary

A new vacancy has arisen in the Point of Care Testing team for a Band 5 Biomedical Scientist which includes the opportunity to work on an exciting community POCT project for a new Virtual Ward service.

The POCT team provide essential services for Southend and Basildon University Hospitals and associated community locations. It provides a high quality and responsive service that includes supporting equipment and training of clinical staff in the performance of blood gas, blood glucose, CRP, urinalysis and pregnancy testing.

The team liaise closely with the nursing and clinical teams. The work is varied and entails troubleshooting instruments, maintaining stock for POCT equipment, monitoring competency and training POCT users. Validation and verification of new equipment is required to support new projects / developments and replacement equipment.

As a member of the Point of Care team you will be required to work on both the hospital sites (Basildon and Southend) and community locations from 8am-8pm. Weekend day working is also a requirement.

Main duties of the job

  • Be able to carry out POCT tasks (dependent on qualifications, experience and training) performing all designated duties in accordance with local working practices whilst maintaining high professional standards and conforming to Health and Safety regulations
  • To provide support and troubleshooting services to maintain essential POCT equipment used in acute clinical areas. Equipment includes blood gas, blood glucose, CRP, urinalysis and pregnancy testing
  • Perform routine and specialist biomedical investigations and participate daily in the scientific and technical activities of the POCT department, under the supervision of Senior Biomedical Scientists
  • Participate in and assist with the implementation of new POCT tests and research & validation of equipment ensuring at all times compliance with all policies as required by regulatory directives, accreditation bodies and local management policies and practices. Propose changes to standard operating procedures as required in order to develop and streamline the service or to reflect other changes
  • Utilise the laboratory LIMS, Q-Pulse quality monitoring system, POCT data managers and other application software according to authorised protocols including assisting in computer data entry in all areas of the laboratory
  • As directed by senior POCT staff, plan and prioritise work allocations, training plans, audits of both yourself and junior staff, responding appropriately to the needs of routine and urgent activities

Essential

  • BSc (Hons) IBMS accredited Biomedical Science degree or equivalent
  • HCPC State Registration as a Biomedical Scientist
  • Working knowledge of Biomedical techniques and practices
  • Good degree of accuracy, numeracy & interpretive skills
  • Experience of working in a Biomedical laboratory
  • Experience of IT applications including LIMS systems, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Statistical packages

Desirable

  • Progress towards a higher degree or management qualification
  • Current driving licence
