Job summary
Are you a compassionate, trauma informed Mental Health Nurse Prescriber looking to make a meaningful difference? We are seeking an experienced V300 Independent Prescriber to join our mental health team within HMP Chelmsford, where you will play a vital role in providing high quality stabilisation, prescribing, and emotion regulation care to individuals in custody.

HMP Chelmsford is a busy Category B local prison providing care to men with a wide range of physical, mental health, and social care needs. Main duties of the job
As a Mental Health Nurse Prescriber, you will:
- Deliver safe, effective prescribing and clinical decision making aligned with NICE and prison formulary guidance.
- Complete comprehensive, trauma informed mental health assessments.
- Develop and deliver stabilisation and emotion regulation plans for individuals experiencing acute distress or dysregulation.
- Provide clinical leadership alongside the Consultant Psychiatrist and Early Days in Custody (EDiC) Lead Nurse.
- Contribute to shared clinical pathways and MDT formulations.
- Support colleagues through training, reflective practice, and guidance in trauma informed care.
- Promote psychologically safe environments across the prison setting.
- Uphold robust governance, safety, and quality standards, including engagement in audits, incident reviews, and PSIRF activities.

- Registered Mental Health Nurse (NMC)
- V300 Independent Prescriber qualification
- Experience in acute, forensic, or secure mental health settings
- Skilled in formulation and trauma informed practice
- Strong communication, collaboration, and clinical leadership skills
- Experience supporting emotion regulation and stabilisation
Desirable
- Training in AMBIT, DBT, MBT, or trauma stabilisation approaches
- Experience contributing to service development, clinical governance, or psychologically informed environments
