Adult Speech & Language Therapy Assistant

Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an Adult Speech & Language Therapy Assistant to join our team at Farnham Hospital, working37.5 hours per week.

In this role, you will work closely with our Speech & Language Therapist to support adults with a range of acquired neurological conditions. You will play a key part in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care, assisting with therapy programmes, and helping individuals to improve their communication and swallowing abilities. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference to patients independence and quality of life within a supportive multidisciplinary team.

This role involves community visits and outpatients clinics across 4 sites within our catchment area Yateley, Frimley Green, Fleet and Farnham, therefore adrivers license and access to a car is essential.

Working Pattern Monday- Friday; 08:30-16:30 this can be flexible (37.5hrs/ week).

Main duties of the job

  • To provide support and advice for the patient and their families/carers about all aspects of their care that relate to their therapy needs under the guidance of the Speech and Language Therapist,
  • To provide and receive sensitive information regarding a patients difficulties and expectations and to respond appropriately
  • To be able to demonstrate empathy and sensitivity in response to patients and their families/carers.
  • To ensure that up to date written electronic records and activity are maintained in accordance with the professional and organisation standards
  • To provide education sessions to patients and their families/carers and external organisations under the guidance of a speech and language therapist
  • To participate in the delivery of the therapy programme both individual and group provision
  • To demonstrate ongoing personal development through participation in internal and external development opportunities
  • To prioritise clinical work and balance other patient related and professional activities as the department requires.
  • To understand the core principles of capacity and consent to treatment and apply this to practice
  • To implement therapy within a range of settings including community wards, outpatient clinics, nursing homes and patients own home.

Ideal Candidate

Essential

  • GCSE English Grade C or above (or equivalent)
  • Excellent IT skills
  • To work independently and as part of a team
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • To be able to adapt written and verbal to account patient level of understanding
  • To be flexible in approach and be responsive to changing demands
  • Able to prioritise/time manage
  • To self- evaluate performance, completing set programmes independently and seek advice as appropriate
  • To gather, analyse and evaluate clinical information with supervision
  • To identify risk and how to minimise its effects upon individuals safety
  • To contribute in team meetings and clinical discussions
  • Full UK drivers license and access to vehicle

While not essential, we would welcome applicants who have an understanding of the range of Speech and Language Therapy provided to adults with acquired neurological conditions, as well as the role of the SLT Assistant within the NHS. Experience of paid or voluntary work with a relevant client group is desirable, alongside experience of working within a multidisciplinary team. Familiarity with using AAC or other therapy apps would also be advantageous.
