Job summary
We are looking for a full time Ward Manager to join our team in Great Western Hospital.
Who demonstrates compassionate communication when discussing patient care, using persuasive and reassuring approaches. Brings expert leadership, with a strong focus on patient safety, quality, and governance. Provides mentorship, staff appraisals, and training, while supporting professional development across the team.
Experienced in clinical assessment, care planning, and managing complex or sensitive situations, including end-of-life care and supporting distressed families. Oversees daily operations with skill in delegation, supervision, and shift coordination. Contributes to service improvement through audits and project work.
Proficient in managing staffing needs, including recruitment, rostering, performance, and wellbeing, while maintaining financial oversight and adhering to HR policies.

Main duties of the job
Fully registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
Meets all mandatory and professional requirements
Strong communicator, skilled in reassurance and conveying complex patient information
Proven leadership and managerial expertise
Committed to delivering and upholding high-quality patient care
Experienced in governance, safety, and clinical standards
Motivates and supports staff development through appraisals and training
Oversees clinical assessments and investigations
Delegates tasks appropriately and provides supervision for senior staff
Proficient in care planning, audits, and service improvement projects
Compassionate in managing end-of-life care and supporting distressed families
Leads effective shift coordination and ward operations
Skilled in finance, budgeting, and efficient roster management
Actively involved in staff recruitment, retention, and managing sickness in line with HR policies

- Excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills
- Time management and prioritisation skills
- Demonstrates sound understanding of personal accountability
- Shows initiative, able to think positively and stimulate a productive team climate
- Works well under pressure
