Job summary

Main duties of the job

As part of a multi-disciplinary team, you will provide assessment and treatment of occupational dysfunction under the supervision of a more senior Occupational Therapist. 

An integral part of this role will be supervising others, with a focus on supporting student education within the team.

Service Line:Mental Health Adults Female (Personality Disorder)

Summary of the site: Cygnet Hospital Maidstone is our state-of-the-art, 63 bed mental health facility for adults situated in the Kent Medical Campus in Maidstone.

Cygnet Hospital Maidstone is purpose built to meet the latest national specifications for improving mental health within a therapeutic environment. The hospital will provide an important and much-needed service for local patients from Kent.

The hospital is split into four distinct wards, each offering specialist mental health services:

  • Roseacre Ward Highly Specialised Personality Disorder service for women
  • Kingswood Ward High Dependency Rehabilitation service for men
  • Bearsted Ward Specialist PICU Service for Men
  • Saltwood Ward Male low secure ward

The hospitals services have been requested and agreed by local and regional NHS bodies to meet the urgent demand for specialist mental health services within Kent. The aim is to ensure that local people can be treated close to home and as near as possible to their friends and family.

Summary of the ward: Roseacre is Cygnet Hospital Maidstones Personality Disorder service for Women. Roseacre supports women with a history of Personality Disorder, self-harm and trauma. You do not need experience in Personality Disorder services; however a willingness to learn new skills.

As an Occupational Therapist, you will provide direct clinical care which will encompass OT assessments, treatment and management of patients within the service. In this role you will assess, implement and develop an OT-led service that meets service users needs. This will be based upon the occupational therapy process, of assessment, intervention and review of occupational need. The focus on this service is community living and functional and coping skills.

MDT:There is a highly experienced Multi-Disciplinary Team is made up of a consultant psychiatrist, specialty doctor, occupational therapist, psychotherapist, assistant psychologist, social worker, registered mental health nurses and healthcare assistants.

Caseload: There are 16 beds on the ward. You will have the support of a full-time Occupational Therapy Assistant.

As a newly qualified OT, you will receive support in growing your OT skills through our 12-month Cygnet OT preceptorship.

You will receive supervision from an experienced Occupational Therapist and support from weekly 1:1 meetings with your supervisor.

Other OTs on site: The Occupational Therapy team is made up of 3 other OTs including a Band 5, Senior OT and a Head OT. There are in total 4 OT Assistants including your ward, and a Recovery College Lead. The team is very supportive and is committed to developing you as a person and clinician.

Unique Selling Point:The ward features a sensory room which is a vital part of the wards strategy of supporting patients in their emotional regulation.

Occupational Therapy Directorate

Under the leadership of our occupational therapy directors we support over 150 Occupational Therapists. Working together as a large team we provide support to each other across the group, with the opportunity to be part of specialist interest groups & become involved in service development.

Every service line has a clinical lead occupational therapist to lead and develop evidence based practice and agreed occupational therapy pathway. There are regular service line meetings for all OTs in the particular service line to share good practice and provide peer support across services.

We ensure our occupational therapists have a voice through participating in service model development, utilising the expertise and support of our clinical lead occupational therapists.

Occupational Therapy Preceptorship & Induction:

Starting a new job can be daunting, which is why we have a robust induction process that enables you to shadow staff, discuss your learning and receive expert support to develop into your role. We offer an Occupational Therapy preceptorship programme in your first12 months as a newly qualified Occupational Therapist to support and consolidate core skills. We also offer regular, virtual Q&A sessions with our clinical lead OT and networking with other Occupational Therapists, OT Assistants and Activity Coordinators in your service line.

Training:You will have access to in-house and external training in order to grow your skills whilst working with us. Some of the training that has been provided in the last year has included MOHO/MOHOST, Motivational interviewing, Remotivation Process, Recovery Through Activity and Case formulation.
