Senior Healthcare Assistant (Dementia)

Job summary

The role of the Senior Health Care Assistant (SHCA) is to assist the nursing staff to implement the care plans of patients at York, and to undertake additional tasks or roles requested by the Clinical Manager, Senior Staff Nurses or Nurses.Senior HCAs will take part in ensuring the smooth running of the shift, supervising more junior colleagues, and ensuring that all allocated tasks are performed. The nursing staff will decide the detailed care plans in conjunction with best practice (e.g. NICE guidelines), and senior HCAs will ensure that implementation of daily activities support the care plans.

Main duties of the job

• Work within an awareness of NICE guidelines;

• Be responsible for establishing therapeutic relationships with the patients;

• Undertake regular physical observations of patients, as directed by nursing staff and feedback appropriately;

• Support and supervise patients at meal times. This may include supporting the patient and nursing team with alternative feeding methods;

• Undertake clinical tasks, for which training has been provided, and competence assessed;

• Liaise with Staff Nurses and Occupational Therapists in terms of unit activity;

• Report any issue of concern to Staff Nurses;

• Work within the Health and Safety policies in accordance with Schoen Clinic York guidelines;

• Demonstrate awareness of safeguarding principles in all dealings with patient and their families where appropriate;

• Represent York in a professional manner, when interacting with families and visiting professionals.

Schoen Clinic York is a highly specialised Hospital for adults in the North of England. We are currently based on the ground floor of Minster Grange as an eating disorder hospital, and in September 2024 will be expanding to cover the full building with other service lines including Dementia care. We are situated just off Haxby Road which is 10 minutes drive from York Train Station and 4 miles from the A64.
