Job summary

PICS are pleased to be able to offer new Mental Health Occupational Therapist roles across the South and Mid Nottinghamshire areas within Primary Care. You will be joining an established team of Mental Health Occupational Therapists. We are dedicated about ensuring that our patients see the right person in the right place, first time and receive quality intervention.

There are current opportunities in the current Primary Care Networks (PCNs):

  • Byron PCN
  • Nottingham West PCN
  • Rosewood PCN
  • Synergy PCN

You will be supported by a wider team of clinicians including Mental Health Practitioners and our Occupational Therapist Clinical Lead who is on the PICS Leadership Team. We currently have Mental Health OTs working in PCNs and have had encouraging feedback from patients with regards to the benefits of the service.

Main duties of the job

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The ability to take a lead role in completing advanced assessments, triage and treatment of acute and chronic presentations for patients with mental health concerns attending primary care.
  • To help patients identify their needs and make shared decisions about management using current evidenced based practice.
  • Liaise with Primary Care colleagues to ensure that all of the patients needs are addressed.
  • Support Primary Care colleagues development in the best treatment and onward management strategies by attending meetings, delivering educational sessions and supporting PCN Practitioners.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • HCPC registered
  • Occupational Therapy Qualification and Registration or equivalent.
  • Experience working in Mental Health

JOB PURPOSE

As an experienced Occupational Therapist with a mental health background, you will provide professional leadership, support and advice within the multi-disciplinary team across a range of Primary Care practices. The post holder will:

  • Work across organisational boundaries, developing new way of working to promote relationships to increase the quality of patient care and service within primary care.
  • Provide a high level of occupational therapy/professional care and treatment to patients through high quality occupational therapy care, assessment and therapeutic intervention to adults with complex and substantial difficulties as part of a multidisciplinary team approach.
  • Work autonomously to undertake advanced practice procedures and promote recovery and wellbeing and maximising independence.
  • Facilitate mainstream primary care services for adults with mental health difficulties to advise and support agencies with regard to meeting their duty of care.
  • Be responsible for disseminating information about good practice and lead on the implementation of good practice that has been developed within the Primary Care Network.
  • Provide compassionate care that is based on empathy, kindness, respect and dignity.
  • Participate in the planning, development and evaluation of clinical services leading on defined projects as agreed with the Clinical Director and in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Knowledge, Skills, Training and Experience

  • Occupational Therapy qualification HCPC registered occupational therapist.
  • Post graduate degree or equivalent qualification or experience.
  • A teaching qualification (e.g., ENB 998/P126/127) or a proven track record in occupational therapy education is desirable but not essential.
  • Highly developed specialist knowledge of meeting the health needs of Adults with Mental Health underpinned by theory and experience.
  • In depth knowledge of National and HCPC policies, procedures, code of conduct and standards of care in relation to service provision for adults with mental health.

Analytical and judgment skills

  • Assess, interpret and analyse range highly complex clinical information and environments, delivering a clear rational for care delivery, clinical outcomes and clinical management strategies.
  • Demonstrate a high level of reflective practice and competence in clinical reasoning and decision making based on evidence-based nursing practice.
  • Demonstrate excellent analytical and judgmental skills in relation to Initial and on-going assessments and subsequent treatment packages and assist colleagues in problem solving and providing quality care and make recommendations as to the best course of action.
  • Initiate and promote Serious Untoward Incident (SUI) reporting and contribute to SUI Investigations as Lead Clinician or Investigator.
  • Contribute, Support and Lead on Complaints Resolutions where the Complaint is in relation to the Quality of clinical interventions and Treatment received. Take on role as Investigating Officer for formal complaints.

Planning and organisation skills

  • Responsible for planning and prioritising their own workload.
  • Work independently as an Advanced Practitioner to manage own complex caseload.
  • Plan and organise specialist occupational therapy provision and adjust as required.
  • Promote, develop, and implement clinical standards and good practices both in care delivery and appropriate record keeping.

Responsibilities for patient/client care

  • Following the completion of a comprehensive core assessment, develop and provide an individualised, evidence-based programme of care based on formulation, including to those with complex needs/challenging behaviours.
  • At all times work in collaboration with patients and carers ensuring that the patient is treated with compassion, respect and dignity.
  • Manage distress and conflict in the day-to-day work with patients who, as an expression of their condition/ diagnosis, may at times be difficult to engage and/or demonstrate significant risk behaviours.
  • Provide effective care and therapeutic interventions to patients presenting with a range of difficulties. To engage in active relapse prevention planning with patients and carers, contributing to their recovery and/ or wellbeing and discharge planning.
  • Provide specialist advice and guidance to patients/carers and practitioners of other professional disciplines, less experienced staff, voluntary organisations and the public.

Policy and Service Development

  • Adhere to policies, procedures, protocols and standards and be instrumental in embedding these in service provision.

  • Understand, contribute and advise on statutory issues which impact on patients and carers. Perform statutory duties and seek advice where necessary.
