JOB SUMMARY

This is an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Psychologist to join a highly motivated, community-based, multidisciplinary team of specialists providing a service to patients with persistent pain, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), and Long Covid.

The Community Pain pathway is provided by Primary Integrated Community Services (PICS), a GP led consortium who provide specialist pain services from the community in Greater Nottingham, Mansfield and Ashfield, and Newark and Sherwood areas. The core value of PICS is that “We Care” about our patients, carers and families, our partners and all the people with whom we work. This is underpinned by our core values and our “can do” approach. These are integral at all levels of the organisation.

Our innovative community pain and ME/CFS pathway delivers an evidenced based service tailored to the needs of Nottinghamshire patients with persistent pain and ME/ CFS. As an experienced Clinical Psychologist, you will be required to meet the activity and quality performance targets of the Organisation and support the supervision of other health care professionals. You need to be an excellent team player, dynamic and forward thinking with ambition for strategic service development.

The role involves psychological assessment and therapy for individuals and support delivery of a British Pain Society recognised Pain Management Programme; offering advice and consultations regarding patients’ psychological care to non-psychological colleagues and carers; utilising research skills for service evaluation, research, audit, and supporting service development.

The role will be 60% clinical delivery, seeing up to 5 patients a day in GP Practices and community locations, or by telephone and Video consultation, and running Pain Management, ME/CFS, and Long Covid Programmes, face to face in community locations, and virtually. The care of individuals or groups will be primarily cognitive-behavioural and third wave therapy (e.g. ACT/CFT/Mindfulness).

Approximately 40% of time will be devoted to evaluation and development of the service, along with supervisory and administrative activity, and provide clinical guidance and teaching within the multidisciplinary team during monthly meetings. You will also be involved in the provision of the staff support and wellbeing service for the wider organisation.

You will work with our Business Intelligence Specialist on audit and data providing clinical analysis to guide service development.

You will also be expected to maintain post-qualification training in line with CPD guidelines set down by the BPS/HCPC, work independently within appropriate professional guidelines and undertake organisational mandatory training.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The post holder will be responsible for:

  • The ongoing development, implementation and evaluation of specialist Psychological therapies and programmes for Pain Management, ME/CFS and Long Covid.
  • Supporting development of an Adolescent Pathway providing transition in to adult services.
  • Undertaking risk assessment and management for individual patients and providing specialist advice to colleagues on issues regarding risk.
  • Service monitoring and improvement, including consultation and engagement of key groups across the local health economy.
  • Data collection, audits, quality measures and reporting to drive service improvement
  • Governance of Psychological practice within the Pain Management, ME/CFS pathway.
  • Demonstrating and fostering excellence in Clinical Practice.
  • Direct clinical delivery within the Pathways programmes.
  • Demonstrating the Core Values of PICS in all aspects of professional conduct.

OPERATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Function as a member of the Community Pain Pathway, contributing to the team’s functioning, as supervised by the Clinical Lead.
  • Ensure that all members of the team have access to a psychologically based framework for understanding and care of patients within the service through the provision of advice and consultation and dissemination of psychological research and theory.
  • To provide expertise, advice, and support to facilitate the effective and appropriate provision of psychological care by all members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • To provide advice, consultation, training, and clinical supervision to other members of the MDT for their provision of psychologically based interventions to help improve engagement.
  • Be accountable for the direct delivery of a service within the Community Pain Pathway.
  • Demonstrate the communication skills necessary to engage and maintain relationships with patients, families, carers, and other professionals, where there are often significant barriers to acceptance and engagement in self-management approaches and psychological therapy.
  • Develop programmes of care. Judgements need to be made involving highly complex facts or situations, which require the analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options.
  • Develop complex formulations based on a range of theoretical perspectives, which will allow the most effective evidence-based intervention (e.g. Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, ACT, CFT, and Mindfulness approaches) to be applied.
  • Conduct risk assessments, develop and share safety plans and appropriate strategies to minimise risk.
  • To provide advice on intervention to other professions including Pain Consultants, GPs, Nurses, Physiotherapists and across a range of agencies and settings where appropriate.
  • To adhere to your professional code of conduct and practice at all times.
  • To maintain, develop and disseminate specialist knowledge of evidence-based practice.
  • To critically evaluate own work using evidence-based projects, audits and outcome measures.
  • To ensure that the professional development of the team meets national standards and that the team will have the appropriate skills to meet the needs of patients in a specialist clinical area.
