Job summary
In view of future expansion of home dialysis program at King's College
Hospital renal unit, KFM is seeking to appoint
an experienced renal technologist to join an established team responsible for
the maintenance of medical equipment used within the hospital and five
satellite units and an established community of patients dialysing at home
across the south London and north Kent area.
You will be required to provide
maintenance and fault finding on a variety of equipment, including dialysis
machines, water purification equipment and a variety of other equipment
including patient monitors and infusion devices.
This post will suit a Clinical Technologists with a degree / HND / HNC in
Electronic Engineering or a related subject and previous renal technology
experience so membership of the RCT will be an advantage.
Main duties of the job
The job entails providing technical support for all departments operated by the KFM Renal Services, both in the hospital and home environment, under the direction of the Principal Renal Technologist.
Because of the multi-site nature of the renal department, technologists will be required to work from any of the dialysis units operated by King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Some of the responsibilities include:
- To carry out service, maintenance, repair and installation of all equipment operated by the Department, according to current approved schedules and procedures.
- Undertake fault-finding by the application of suitable techniques; using methods learnt from training courses, manufacturers literature and from other colleagues.
- Ascertain fault details from operators and where appropriate highlight deficiencies in operator training to your manager.
- Work within the guidance of the department and KFM procedures; ensuring legal and professional standards are maintained.

Essential
- A degree in a relevant scientific subject e.g. Physiology, Electronics, Biomedical Engineering OR Evidence of successful completion of approved IPEM training program for inclusion on RCT OR Extensive experience of working in renal technology
- Substantial experience in a busy technical or scientific or medical engineering environment.
- Experience of working in a technical role
- Specialised knowledge of renal dialysis systems, water treatment systems, medical electronics, electro-mechanical systems, computing and medical device support.
- Specialist training on the maintenance and repair of a range of medical devices including renal dialysis systems.
- Demonstrable knowledge of Renal Replacement Therapies. Good level of understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure.
- Able to use fine tools for equipment adjustment/assembly.
- Able to handle medium loads within safe limits.
- Able to concentrate for long periods to allow accurate working.
- Able to communicate complex information across professional boundaries (e.g. fault finding in an emergency call out, to minimise misunderstanding and obtain the required information).
- Able to communicate complex information to patients both in person and via telephone.
- Reside within an acceptable travelling distance from the Trust to provide on-call cover.
- Possess a full UK Manual driving licence.
- Able to deal with emotionally challenging circumstances when working in clinical areas (e.g. when visiting wards and homes fault finding on patient connected equipment).
- Able to demonstrate previous experience working with Medical Devices and have knowledge of current instrumentation and measurement techniques.
- Experience of working in a large multidisciplinary team
- Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to all staff (managers, medical staff, nursing staff etc.)
- IT literate and has good working knowledge of everyday IT applications and devices.
