Job responsibilities
Overall Objectives:
To
be responsible for providing skilled clinical and technical assistance as a
member of the operating theatre team and to participate in the assessment of
patient care needs and implement and maintain agreed standards of care.
Job Summary:
The post holder will ensure that professional
& national standards are met in accordance to the Nursing & Midwifery
Council (NMC), Health Professional Council (HPC) and HCAS Code of Conduct.
- Assessing,
planning, delivering and evaluation of peri-operative patient care
- Participate
in the delegation and supervision of junior grades, unqualified and less
experienced staff
- Working
with members of the Multi Disciplinary Team following local protocols and
standards
- Awareness
of the effective management of resources within the department
- Participate
in education, training and development of other staff.
- Assist
in the management and organisation of the operating theatre(s)
- Comply
with the requirements of Health & Safety and principles of COSHH
(Containment of Substances Hazardous to Health)
The post holder will be expected to take part in
the on-call rotas and rostered weekend duties.
The post holder will be required to provide
surgical, anaesthetic or recovery
assistance to the consultants during all surgical procedures whether under
local/regional/sedation/ general anaesthetic.
Create and maintain legible and accurate records
of care in accordance with BUPA and the Cromwell Hospitals local policies and
procedures.
Maintain a personal, professional profile,
identifying role and skill developments.
Role Specific:
- Assist
in the positioning and preparation of a patient as directed by the
surgical team and ensure that any specimens are correctly labelled and
dispatched to the laboratory.
Help
to control cross infection by observing departmental policy regarding dress,
the maintenance of a clean working environment, decontamination and
sterilisation procedures and asepsis.
- Participate
in induction and orientation programmes for new staff to ensure a
welcoming environment.
- Assist
the team leaders in the Personal
Development Plans of junior staff
Prepare
patients for clinical/ operative procedures, both in anaesthetics and surgery.
Provide
assistance in clinical/ operative procedures, both anaesthetics and surgery.
Provide
immediate post-operative care.
- Provide
initial emergency care as required
- Take
charge of the clinical area in the absence of an advanced practitioner
ensuring patient, visitors and staff safety.
- Ensure
all equipment is checked prior to use and any faults reported to the
Theatre Co-ordinator
- Participate
fully as a team member, including working in all areas of the theatre
suite, sharing knowledge and information and supporting colleagues, to
promote a cohesive team and the achievement of team objectives.
- Adhere
to the procedures for the use of supplies, ordering requirements for the
Department as directed by line manager.
- Ensure
the accurate collection of data in relation to theatre activity.
To
ensure confidentiality at all times, only releasing confidential information
obtained during the course of employment to those acting in an official
capacity in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act and its
amendments.
Maintain
the safe custody, handling of drugs in accordance with hospital policy.
To
undertake such duties as may be required from time to time as are consistent
with the responsibilities of the grade and the needs of the service.
Participate
in the robust reporting of incidents and comply with any ensuing
investigations.
- The post holder will be appraised on an annual basis and
the process will include a review of the past years performance, setting
of aims and objectives for the coming year and identification of education
needs.
Infection Control:
Infection
control is everyones responsibility.
All staff, both clinical and non-clinical, are required to adhere to the
Cromwell Hospital Infection Prevention and Control Policies and make every
effort to maintain high standards of infection control at all times thereby
reducing the burden of Healthcare Associated Infections including MRSA.
All staff
employed by the Cromwell Hospital has the following key responsibilities:
Staff must
wash their hands or use alcohol gel on entry and exit from all clinical areas
and/or between each patient contact.
Staff members
have a duty to attend mandatory infection control training provided for them by
the hsoptial..
Staff members
who develop an infection (other than common colds or illness) that may be
transmittable to patients have a duty to contact Occupational Health.
Professional
Responsibilities:
Practice
with full regard to Hospital and Department Policies, and work within the Codes
of Professional Conduct. Ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory
procedures in accordance with registering authorities policies and guidelines.
Take responsibility for own professional development, ensuring management,
clinical and technical skills and knowledge are updated and enhanced.
Integrated Governance:
- Understand
implications of Integrated Governance and adhere to hopsital governance
policies including the reporting of incidences, near misses.
- Ensure
compliance to standards in respect of all legis;ative reuirements,
including but not limited to CQC, SHE, DSE, Fire, COSHH, BLS, Manual
handling, Safeguarding Children and Adults, Information Security, Infection
Control and Blood Transfusion.
- Manintain
safe working practices and adhere to clinical risk management policy and
recommendations.
- Participate
and assist in developing standards of patient care based on sound research
findings.
- Proactively
assist the Nursing team in audit and quality assurance programmes.
- Adopt
the correct administrative procedures when dealing with complaints from
patients/relatives following set policies and procedures.
Customers:
Maintain
positive working relationships with all Consultants, ensuring individual
Consultant protocols are utilised.
Health Clearance:
Applicants
must complete a medical questionaire and return it to the hospitals
Occupational Health Providers.
Criminal Records Bureau
Disclosure:
This

enquires and pending prosecutions, through a Criminal Records Bureau
check. If appropriate, you are

Confidentiality and Disclosure of Information:
In
the course of your normal work you will come into possession of confidential
information concerning patients, the Cromwell and it staff. This information
should be treated confidentially and in accordance with the Bupa Cromwell
Hospitals policy and the Data Protection Act (1998) and European Union
regulations.
Health & Safety:
Comply with all
Hospital policies in line with the Health and Safety at Work Act, (1974). Report all incidents/accidents immediately to
the appropriate senior member of the Clinical Directorate. Complete the required documentation form.
Data/Security:
The post holder
is responsible for ensuring that he/she maintains the integrity and quality of
both computerised and manual data.
