Job summary

An exciting opportunity to join our Long Term Ventilation Service at the Royal Hospital for Neuro Disability as a Ward Manager of Leonora Ward. The role provides an opportunity to be involved in a service that provides the largest long term ventilation service and providing innovative and transformational care that best serve our patient community.

This role is based within one of our specialist long term ventilation unit,which offers care and treatment for people who need ventilator support in a specially designed environment. Our multi-disciplinary team made up of a specialist consultant, nursing staff and a range of therapists, cares for people with complex respiratory needs on both a short-term or longer-stay basis. The service is supported by a specialist consultant from the Lane Fox Unit, the largest complex home ventilation and weaning centre in England.

The ward manager will lead andwork as part of the multi-disciplinary team to deliver a high standard of care to the patient and residents of the hospital. You will be an essential member of the ward and will work alongside an interdisciplinary team to provide clinical oversight and nursing leadership. Extensive knowledge of invasive ventilationand tracheostomy careis essential to this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • To provide effective line management for ward staff ensuring adequate resources to ensure safe practice within their agreed establishment and budgets.
  • Monitor & attain financial performance within ward budget.

Main duties of the job

  • To deliver a high standard of care to the patient and residents of the hospital.
  • To provide leadership and direction to the nursing workforce in your ward.
  • To participate in complaints management within the framework of the hospital complaints policy; this will include undertaking investigations, incident reporting and investigating and root cause analyses including reviewing trends and reporting and monitoring
  • To actively contribute to creating a culture where quality is at the centre of everything we do and is delivered on all occasions to the highest level, in accordance with the appropriate CQC regulations and professional standards including the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code.

Qualifications

Essential

  • First level Registered Nurse with current registration on the NMC register.
  • First degree in relevant subject or post-registration qualification in Specialist Practice that is relative to the role or equivalent experience.
  • Experience and knowledge working with Ventilation Patients
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Teaching/Mentor qualification or the commitment to undertake and successfully complete within 12 months of appointment.
  • Knowledge of NMC Codes and guidelines and their implications for practice.
  • Knowledge of the Health & Social Care Act 2008 and Care Quality Commission Requirements.
  • Knowledge of Human Resources policies, processes and tools including interviewing, performance coaching and conducting performance reviews.
  • Good financial awareness and control.

Desirable

  • Relevant management/leadership qualification or evidenced experience.
  • Evidence of study at MSc level within either leadership or specialist area of nursing practice.
