Job summary

We are seeking a Leisure Activities Coordinator who has a creative flare and out-of-the-box thinking to organise and run activities for our patients and residents in the RHN.

As an integral part of our team, you will be responsible for planning a diverse range of therapeutic and meaningful activity programs that cater to our patients’ and residents' social and emotional wellbeing. 

Excellent socials skills are required, as you will interact with residents and their families across the organisation, supervising and supporting volunteers who contribute to various activities, including large group sessions and one-on-one befriending. 

This role is ward-based and also involves administrative duties related to resident and family services, such as coordinating hairdressing, aquarium maintenance, and liaising with legal and welfare services.

Main duties of the job

As Leisure Activities Coordinator, you will be based across all specialist areas in our organisation which include: Continuing Care Service, Ventilator Unit, Brain Injury Service and Neuro-behavioural unit. You would be responsible for providing a comprehensive activity program and interact with residents and family members from across the organisation.

  • To work with the team to create and provide a stimulating and varied programme of therapeutic leisure activities and social events for residents to enjoy.
  • To facilitate ward based group and individual therapeutic activities.
  • To help run larger group activities that take place in the central hospital grounds including the Assembly Room.
  • To provide resources and ideas to ward staff for group and 1-1 social activities.
  • To work with new resident/family to gain an understanding of the residents likes, dislikes and functional abilities. Work with the MDT to create a personalised therapeutic leisure program.
  • To work as a member of the team and wider MDT with support in planning, organising and providing a program of therapeutic leisure activities.
  • Interact with relatives and or visitors either in person or by telephone.  Ensure they are aware of upcoming events.
  • Develop and maintain activity notice boards/ward communication boards.  Liaise with the Communications Team and IT Teams for support to ensure these boards and information remain up to date.

Essential

  • Basic understanding of cognitive and communication difficulties associated with brain injury and the impact upon the patient.
  • Basic understanding of impairments associated for those residents diagnosed as being in a Prolonged Disorder of Consciousness.
  • Educated to a standard which ensures excellent literacy and numeracy (GCSE/O Level Maths and English)
  • Competent IT skills including management of basic technology i.e. tables, computers, projectors etc.

Desirable

  • NVQ level 3 or equivalent qualification / experience in a related subject i.e. Health and social care.

Experience

  • Excellent organisational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience of working with adults with a disability either in health, social or educational setting.
  • Willingness to undertake training as required.
  • Able to respond flexibly to changing situation, prioritise appropriately and deal calmly with unexpected events or difficult situations.
  • Innovative, able to work autonomously and take responsibility appropriately.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with patient, family, multi-disciplinary team and with other professionals.
