Job summary

NUPAS are recruiting a part-time, permanent, and experienced Operating Surgeon to join their expanding medical team. The successful candidate will have a pro-active and enthusiastic approach which will enable them to efficiently provide a safe and effective Surgical Abortion pathway to our patients.

Main duties of the job

Ensure a high standard of clinical care in safe surgical management of termination of pregnancy.

Drive best practice in patient care, efficiency and clinical outcomes ensuring clinical policies and operating practices are followed and updated in response to developments in clinical practice or service changes.

Monitor and audit quality clinical practice, including the delivery of audit and direct observation of peers.

Look for opportunities for innovation and service improvements to improve patient care and standards of patient safety.

Foster a learning environment where all staff evaluate the quality of patient care, feel able to raise concerns, and where learning is shared.

NUPAS are recruiting a part-time, permanent, and experienced Operating Surgeon to join their expanding medical team.

We have clinics in the North West, Staffordshire, Southeast and Greater London.

The successful candidate will have a pro-active and enthusiastic approach which will enable them to efficiently provide a safe and effective Surgical Abortion pathway to our patients.

Job Summary

Carry out medical assessment face to face or remote for abortion provision, contraceptive advice and provision inclusive of LARCS. Also provide assessment for post abortion problems.

Work with the pre-operative team (consisting of nurses and midwives) to provide advice and solutions when they alert you to medical or other conditions which may affect the management of patients.

Advise patients of complication rates and potential risks associated with treatments as required.

Ensure patients are fully aware of all important issues relating to treatment and aftercare.

For patients below the age of 16: Ensure the patient has sufficient understanding and intelligence to give valid informed consent.

Ensure that a record of pre- treatment assessment, operation record, recovery notes and any post treatment assessment and care is made in the patient notes. Complete statutory documentation.

Assess patients fitness to undergo safe abortion. Carry out abortion by the appropriate method to evacuate the products of conception in accordance with NUPAS policies and procedures.

Initiate appropriate referral measures if there is any concern that the patient may be at risk.

Be present in the operating theatre or treatment room throughout each procedure and remain on site until all patients have been assessed fit for discharge from recovery or passed to the care of another on-site doctor.

Provide support, advice and guidance to the nursing, midwifery and other staff in the management of unexpected outcomes.

Discuss contraception options and fit long-acting reversible contraception as necessary, prescribe other methods.

Maintain appropriate standard of care and availability of expertise in event of an unexpected outcome.

Prescribe post-operative pain relief and other medications/fluids as required and in collaboration with the anaesthetist where appropriate.

Respond to requests for review of patients by nursing and midwifery staff in line with timings laid out in the MEWS Escalation Chart.

Complete HSA4 forms in the timeframes required by legislation.

Effective pain management and support recovery staff.

Identify the early onset of potential problems and take immediate appropriate action.

Safeguard patient health and safety.

Governance and Risk Management

Ensure termination services meet the highest standards of clinical excellence, and that risks are identified and appropriately managed.

  • Experience of independent practice for abortion procedures relevant to the post applied for, or willingness to be trained in-house.
  • Has been providing surgical abortions for the last 12 months.

Desirable

  • Experience in Ultrasound scan guided Feticide
  • Experience in inserting osmotic cervical dilators
  • Experience of intrauterine contraception insertion
  • Experience of contraceptive implant insertion
