The role is part time and NUPAS will consider various contracts to suit both parties.The successful candidate will have a pro-active and enthusiastic approach which will enable them to efficiently provide a safe and effective Surgical Abortion pathway to our patients.

Look for opportunities for innovation and service improvements to improve patient care and standards of patient safety.

Pre Treatment Assessment

Ensure appropriate assessments and investigations have been undertaken prior to planned procedure (s)

Assess and provide advice on the management of clients with medical or other conditions which may affect the planned procedure (s)

Provide clinical advice to nurses/midwives in relation to clients with complex histories or other problems;

In cases when a client is deemed unsuitable for treatment, ensure the rationale is thoroughly documented in the case note; support staff where needed to facilitate hospital referral

Complete statutory documentation

Safe and appropriate provision of care

Ensure effective placement of clients for hospital-based care

Compliance with statutory regulations

Pre Operative

Review the clients case notes to ensure understanding of the planned procedure(s) and clients medical history

Assess ultrasound scan to ensure clients are within the gestation limit and the Abortion Act

Determine the need for pharmacological or mechanical prophylaxis against venous thromboembolism if indicated by the pre-operative risk assessment in collaboration with an anaesthetist (where present)

Ensure required instruments are available

Prescribe and perform cervical preparation where indicated +_ feticide

Engage with perioperative procedures including the Surgical Safety Checklist

Provision of safe surgical procedure in accordance with experience and competence

Compliance with NUPAS policies and procedures

Efficient and safe delivery of surgical procedure

Intra Operative

Carry out termination of pregnancy and related procedures by the appropriate methods in accordance NUPAS Guidelines, Policies and Procedures

Ensure that a record of the procedure is made in the client notes

Be present in the operating theatre/treatment room throughout the procedure(s)

Successful termination of pregnancy, minimising risk

Accurate, contemporaneous and legible record

Maintain appropriate standard of care and availability of expertise in event of an unexpected outcome

Post Operative

Prescribe post-operative pain relief and other medications/fluids as required and in collaboration with the anaesthetist where appropriate

Respond to requests for review of clients by nursing and midwifery staff in line with timings laid out in the MEWS Escalation Chart

Before leaving a unit at the end of a surgical list, review clients in recovery with the recovery nurse/midwife ensuring there are no concerns and remain contactable in person or by telephone until all clients have left the unit

Complete HSA4 forms in the timeframes required by legislation

Effective pain management and support recovery staff

Identify the early onset of potential problems and take immediate appropriate action

Safeguard client health and safety

Compliance with statutory regulations

Governance and Risk Management

Ensure termination services meet the highest standards of clinical excellence, and that risks are identified and appropriately managed.

Report and address any complaints, adverse events or other issues and ensure any learning is shared across the organisation.

Develop and maintain safe systems of work.
