Custody Clinical Coordinator - Thames Valley Custody Suites.

Job summary

We are seeking a Custody Clinical Coordinator to join our healthcare service across Thames Valley Police (TVP) custodial suites. This is a senior clinical role with responsibility for the supervision, support and coordination of healthcare staff working in custody settings. You will provide expert oversight of patient care, lead on risk management for vulnerable detainees, and ensure the highest standards of safe, compassionate healthcare. Acting as a key point of contact for healthcare teams, police colleagues and partner agencies, you will balance leadership with hands on clinical practice, helping to deliver safe, consistent and effective services in a challenging environment.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide clinical supervision, mentorship and support to Healthcare Professionals (HCPs) across Thames Valley custody sites.

  • Act as a visible point of contact for staff, police and wider agencies, supporting the early identification and assessment of high-risk detainees.

  • Oversee care planning and ensure high standards of patient care, with professional curiosity and evidence-based practice.

  • Manage team rotas, short-term absence cover, supervision, appraisal, and performance management where required.

  • Ensure staff compliance with professional standards, statutory training, and organisational policies.

  • Collaborate closely with custody teams, particularly the PACE Inspector, to ensure effective management of clinical risk.

  • Coordinate safeguarding referrals and liaise with external services including Liaison and Diversion, mental health and substance misuse teams.

  • Contribute to service development, quality assurance, audits, and learning from incidents.

  • Deputise for senior management where required and participate in leadership activities and team meetings.

  • Part time flexible working pattern (21 hours per week) - £26,736.62
  • 12 hour shifts 7am-7pm and 7pm-7am

Main responsibilities include:

  • Providing line management, including supervision, appraisal, managing poor performance and identifying CPD strategies.
  • Carry out comprehensive clinical assessments to determine fitness for detention or interview
  • Manage medical emergencies, treat injuries and provide health advice
  • Collect and preserve forensic samples in line with legal and professional standards
  • Liaise with police officers, NHS services, mental health teams and other agencies
  • Maintain accurate clinical and evidential records
  • Attend court when required to give impartial professional evidence
  • Undertake accredited forensic training and continuous professional development

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Qualified Registered Nurse or Paramedic.
  • A minimum of 5 years post qualification experience acute medical healthcare experience.
  • Previous experience as a Forensic Custody Healthcare Professional.

Desirable

  • Previous experience in any of the following would be ideal to assist you in the role; A&E, Walk in Centre, Paramedic Practitioner, Substance Misuse, Community Nursing, Police Custody, Prison, or other relevant discipline.
