Job summary

Alliance is a leading local children's mental health service delivering psychological support and emotional well-being services in a range of educational and community settings. We support a whole school/college approach to improving mental health and wellbeing. We provide psychological therapies to children and families with multiple and complex needs.

Our Mental Health Support Teams were first established in September 2019. Hartlepool and Stockton on Tees (HaST) Trailblazer were one of the first pilot sites for the Government endorsed Mental Health Support Teams, and as a service we are now well established in 40 schools across HaST. The successful candidates will join a team of Educational Mental Health Practitioners, Childrens Wellbeing Practitioners, Therapeutic Parenting Practitioners and Clinical Supervisors.

Main duties of the job

You will be qualified to deliver low-intensity evidence-based CBT interventions and hold a recognised CYP IAPT or IAPT qualification. You will be working as part of a newly established MHST working alongside Trainee EMHPs (Educational Mental Health Practitioners) delivering and developing a range of groupwork and 1:1 interventions with both children, young people and parents and building the offer of mild-moderate mental health interventions. You will be committed in supporting a whole school approach to mental health and wellbeing. This exciting opportunity comes with a commitment to support CPD and personal development.

We would also welcome applications from adult trained Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners (PWPs) who may have experience of working with younger people/adults, or those qualified who have no experience and would be happy to undertake additional CPD to support career progression into transforming childrens mental health and wellbeing services alongside our teams.

As part of the National Trailblazer for transformation of mental health and emotional wellbeing in schools, Hartlepool & Stockton (HAST) CCG and Partners have been awarded funding from the Department of Education, NHS England and Health Education England to implement Childrens Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs) in Schools. We are delighted that we are lead employers working in collaboration with other partner organisations to implement and deliver services within our local area.

The Mental Health Support Teams are intended to:

  • Deliver evidence-based interventions for mild to moderate mental health and emotional wellbeing needs
  • Support senior mental health leads in educational settings to develop and introduce their whole-school or whole college approach to mental health and emotional wellbeing
  • Providing timely advice to staff and liaising with external specialist services so that children and young people can get the right support and remain in education

Job Purpose

The post-holder will work within a MHST supporting the delivery of the key aims and functions of the team as stated above. You will be delivering high-quality; brief outcome focused evidence-based interventions for children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties, including psycho-education, self-help and work with a range of presentations such as anxiety, low mood and behavioral difficulties. You will hold the necessary knowledge, attitude and capabilities to operate effectively in a diverse and value driven service. The post holder will deliver LI CBT interventions both individual and psycho-educational groupwork to children, young people and parents and within both an education and community setting.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

To provide assessment, including risk assessment, of children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties.

To support management of waiting lists playing a proactive role in educational settings.

To operate within Alliance Service Referral to Discharge Protocols and within a Consultation Approach to supporting settings and children in getting the right support at the right time.

To make use of referral pathways following assessment for children young people and families requiring other services, including statutory and voluntary agencies, working closely with Schools Cluster Leads in the development of pathways to specialist CaMHS Services.

To explore and evaluate clinical treatment using evaluation tools, contributing to evidence-based practice

To deliver groupwork in school and community settings with the aim of facilitating the learning of others i.e EMHPs, teaching and support staff and supporting the sustainability of evidence informed programmes within these settings.

To select and deliver a range of appropriate low-intensity therapeutic interventions for children young people and families experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties and delivered in collaboration with the child, young person and family

Working in collaboration to support children, young people and families in the self-management of presenting difficulties.

Working in collaboration with children young people and families to develop effective treatment plans and agreed outcomes.

Through close case management and supervision, escalate cases where the level of need becomes beyond scope, or more severe ensuring adherence to other relevant elements of service delivery.

Provide a range of information and support for evidence based psychological treatments. This may include guided self-help. This work may be face-to-face, by telephone or via other media.

To work with families involved with social care liaising closely with Social Workers and other professionals working across Children, Young People and Family Services.

Adhere to an agreed activity contract relating to the overall number of children and young people contacts offered, and sessions carried out per week in order to improve timely access and minimise waiting times.

Training and Supervision

Attend and fulfil all the requirements of the training element of the post including practical, academic and practice-based assessments.

Apply learning from any CPD training to practice

Collaborate in clinical supervision and case management, to meet the required standards.

Prepare and present case load information to supervisors and case managers within the service on an agreed and scheduled basis, in order to ensure safe practice and the governance obligations of the trainee, supervisor and service are delivered.

Respond to and implement supervision suggestions by supervisors in practice.

Work within the boundaries of service delivery and support to meet the requirements of the service needs.

Engage in and respond to personal development supervision to improve competences and practice.

Partnership Working

To create and maintain effective working relationships within the MHST and develop close working relationships with partner agencies including staff in educational settings, by providing advice and consultative support on emotional and mental health issues, and in relation to appropriate referral pathways for children, young people and families experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties.

To liaise effectively with other local providers, including statutory, voluntary sector organisations and on behalf of the child, young person or family.
